Has anyone made up Stats and house rules for Smaug? If so can they share them or PM me please. I planning on getting hold of a large Dragon to Proxy for a few games.

I created a profile for Smaug, it hasn't been tested yet but I think it suits him. The idea is that he could be killed by a single lucky arrow - but it is very unlikely! I also like that he an army of his own and so he is 500 points, but I think that's about right.

Here's the profile:

SMAUG THE MAGNIFICENT (Dragon, Monster)

Points Value: 500

Smaug is one of the mightiest dragons to have ever inhabited Middle Earth. His outer scales are near impenetrable and his fire has slain many foes. He desolated the city of Dale and drove the Dwarves of Erebor from their homeland. He has a love of gold stronger than any man. His vanity is his biggest weakness.

Move F S D A W C Might Will Fate
12” 10/3+ 10 9 4 1 7 3 8 0

Terror, Harbinger of Evil, Resistant to Magic, Fly, Fearless.

The Terrible. The first enemy of the turn that Smaug charges suffers a single Strength 10 hit.

The Magnificent. Smaug counts as a Monstrous Mount and so receives all the usual cavalry bonuses.

But One Weakness. Smaug has only one weak point in his impenetrable hide; a loose scale revealing his tough inner hide. This spot needs to be hit exactly to stand any chance of causing a Wound to Smaug. When rolling To Wound against Smaug a 6+ In the Way test must be passed; from both shooting and close combat attacks.

Lonely Dragon. Smaug may not call ‘With Me’ or use the Stand Fast! rule.

Wrym Tongue. Any enemy model within 6” of Smaug attempting to use a point of Might must use two points instead of the usual one. If they only have one remaining Might point they may not perform the Heroic Action.

Fire Ball. In the Move phase Smaug may choose not to Move and may instead announce that he is ‘Preparing to unleash a fireball’. The fireball is used in the Shoot phase and has a range of 12”. The target and all models within 2” suffer a Strength 6 hit.

Ancient Beast. After any Will has been used to resist spells, Smaug may roll an additional dice to resist the effects of a magical power. This means that when he has 0 Will, he is able to roll two dice with the Resistant to Magic special rule.

Does your profile have only 1 wound & no fate or was that a mistake...

All attacks require a 6+ in the way test, so with D9 that still makes him pretty hard to kill. I like it. It's thematic.

I'd just use standard Dragon stats, and give him all four possible upgrades. After all, he does Breathe Fire, Fly, have a Thick Hide, and use something like Compel to make Bilbo take off the ring (in the film).

I'd say the same, but I really like Jacob's rules. But I would add, that the special in the way test isn't influenced by any other special rule and because he can only be killed by fortune heros are not allowed to use might to influence it.

Hmm... It could be good to include 'Smaug the Golden' as an optional extra, where he gains some sort of armour bonus based on the fact he's covered in gold? Just a thought.

I don't actually play the game though, just collect, therefore about 90% of your rules are are nonsense to me. So if what I've just suggested can't be done with the SBG rules then please ignore. :-D

Yeah I did consider that, possibly have him count as a banner or something due to his splendidness but it felt a bit OTT and I think he should definitely be designed to work alone. Some kind of armour boost could work though.

I'd also definitely apply Frenrin's rule where the 6+ is pure fortune and luck and so can't be altered with Might. The To Hit and To Wound rolls still could be though.

Just need a model now to be able to test it out!

Surely Bard shooting at him should be allowed to use Might (but only him)

Don't forget about Bards rules. If he shouts the black arrow and is allowed to use might, he only needs 3+ to hit (which he can re roll) and 3+ to pass the special in the way roll if he uses all of his might. So he has a chance of 16/27 nearly 2/3 to kill Smaug.
Besides I don't like special rules reffering to specific foes. If your opponent field the right models he has a great disadvantage, but if he doesn't you pay points for nothing.

I wouldn't call it a In-the-way otherwise Legolas would have a easier deal of trying to wound him any turn with his auto-hit

As I said, call it like you want, but add that no other ability or special rule can influence it and this dice always has to be rolled.
I can imagine someone trying to use Floi to kill this Smaug.
