Here is the back of the model. Several layers of drybrush to achieve a dusty but refined look.

I did sme more work on Gandalf. :)

I painted his robes and his hat. I found the hat slightly difficult, as it is quite flat, and lacks any obvious areas to highlight. I highlighted the edge of the brim, but chose to apply a light drybrush on the tip of the hat. If the hat looks a little rougher in texture, that is intentional. I did a little research, looking up images of Gandalf and noticed that his hat has a very grainy texture; as do all his clothes actually. I also noticed how dark his clothing is, and how little contrast it has. To show this, I've decided to limit my highlights, and focus more on shading instead. That may not seem like the smartest descion in a contest, but I like to stay true to the movies and have fun doing so, and having fun is more important then winning any contest afterall. :)

Now, as they say a picture is worth a 1,000 words...

Any thoughts? :)

Excellent work Josh, the base is much better than mine. The hat is really annoying there is almost nowhere for washes to really sink in in order to create depth. I also dry brushed the hat. Seven layers of dry brush. There as follows. Shadow Grey; Shadow Grey/Codex Grey 1:1 mix; Codex Grey; Codex Grey/Skull White 2:1 mix; Dry brushed highlights of Codex Grey/Skull White 1:1; second dry brush highlights. It has given it a nice texture and an interesting colour.

NOTE: Some of this was added after the photo.

Interesting. I just picked up Gandalf the White over the weekend. I might just have to give it a shot. . .

Yes, the hat really is underwhelming in comparison to the rest of the miniature, which I quite like.

Thank you for the compliments on the base, Cal. It really wasn't too difficult, I just took two pices of cork tray and broke them up into the proper shape, following that I simply added sand to the flat areas. I gave everything an undercoat of Chaos Black, and then followed with a heavy drybrush of an even mix of Codex Grey and Chaos Black. I then drybrushed Codex Grey and Fortress Grey on, each drybrush being lighter then the last. To finish everything off I watered down some Badab Black and applied this around the base of the rocks to create the effect of shadows. I also used some Thraka Green, which was washed into the nooks and crannies of the cork, similar to moss or mold. Not too difficult, but it gives a nice effect all the same. I would prefer to use slate rock rather then cork, but this was unavailable to me. I personally think slate has a a look more reminescent of Moria. Hope this will help you with any future Moria bases. :)

Your Gandalf is looking very nice, Cal. As is your Saruman, KJ. I look forward to seeing your work on the staff. :)

Best Regards,
Josh

Everyone's miniatures are looking great. KJ, I like how you used grey for shadow in the robes rather than a beige or brown color like most people use. Everyone keep up the good work :)

:o :D This is shaping up to be a thread I'll check back on frequently. I really like how the saruman is shaping up KJ. I will enjoy seeing different takes on the same miniature. 8) :yay:

I'm painting Saruman. I will be painting him in a very special way. More details later.

Here he is based. He is currently undercoated too. (don't look at Grima)

I've done some more work on Saruman's outer robes today. This is how thats going:

Image

I am very much considering repainting the inner robes, they look very bad in comparison to the outer robes. I didn't blend the inner ones and there is a fair bit of brown showing through, which I really do not like.

Come over to my WIP and take a look at the question I have posed as to what to do with my staff, I thought it a better place to discuss it there as I don't want these pesky competitors to get any ideas. :P

Just kidding, they are allowed to peek too. :)

KJ

Looks good. Green stuff is pretty tricky to work with if you don't have much experience.

My Gandalf model was primed white yesterday. With some luck, I'll start painting him this weekend - he's next up my queue (after I finish the current dwarf I'm working on).

I'm with you, Brent. I just now have Gandalf based and primed. These guys are leaving me in the dust!

Great work, everyone. By the end of December, we are going to have a gaggle of great Gandalfs!
