Best way is to have a blank background - like you have. Use the Macro setting on your camera with no flash. Make sure there is plenty light, could be the light your using. A fairly strong light will do the job, there's not much silver in the mini's your doing so it's easier (normaly it shines off)

Depends what type of wood you want to portray. if it's oak, then you should start with a scorched brown base with not too many highlight stages. if it's birch, then you'd start a bit lighter, like maybe graveyard earth or something.

Or do you mean real wood?? if so then you'll want to abrade(sand) the wood a bit first. then to make sure it's fully covered, put more than one layer of paint on the wood.

That's all I know.

after a whole night work (didnt sleep at all  ) i've finally finished 3 buildings :) once again, they're not really for lotr but for 40k but i havent worked on anything Middle Earth-related so i dont have anything else to show you

but i promise that my next project will be the proper theme, thats why i needed to know how to paint wood and the previous picture(should be 2 of them but i dont know what happened :( ) is part of the project, i should be finished fairly soon as i have done most of the work already, ill post the pics of that quite soon aswell :P

The wood looks great- well done. I love the 40k buildings (being a player myself) the wires and the corrugated iron/cardboard give it a nice touch as well. Is the main structure just foamboard?
What do you use for texturing as well if you don't mind me asking?
Great work again.

thanks!
and yep :) its only foamboard i wouldnt mind trying to do the same with some thicker polystyrene to see if i could make them bigger :-D

and the texture on the walls is quite simple actually, i just mix some wheat flour, pva glue, plaster and water and apply a thin coat on the foamboard, after that you minght want to paint over it with watered down pva glue just to make it stronger
