I really like what you did with the backpack (gives it a more personal touch) and Filil.

Thanks! I tried to copy the backpack's design from the movie but alas, I had no reference material, so it's not entirely screen-accurate! Ah well!

Thanks John! These next conversions were anything but easy...

I'm glad you liked them, Legolas! Thanks for reading!

Sooo, I got a bit carried away this evening and undertook three rather ambitious conversions: Dwalin, Bifur and Gloin. Without further ado...

DWALIN:
Image

The arms are in their original places, but the right hand was cut away from the hammer and the left hand was rotated a bit. I then cut off one of the axe-heads from the axes strapped to Dwalin's back and fashioned him an axe for his bare right hand. Using the other axe head, I crafted another axe to attach to his back and filled in the gap between his shoulders with green stuff, mimicking his fur collar.

Image

I'm pretty fond of this pose and can't wait to paint him!

BIFUR:
Image

The original sculpt has Bifur pointing downwards with his boar spear; I decided I'd rather have him pointing upwards (as if he were charging the Trolls or the Goblin King), so I removed the shaft between his two hands and painstakingly attached an old spear shaft between the two, once the arms were repositioned and greenstuffed into place. It was a nightmare trying to get the shaft and the spear head to align properly, especially as my spear head is a bit wonky and warped anyway. Still, I like it!

GLOIN:
Image

This one was pretty simple but it took me a while to figure out the pose. I chopped Gloin's arms off at the armpit and repositioned them with greenstuff. I think this pose makes G look rather dynamic, as if he were charging forward, and the way he's holding the axe in his left hand kinda reminds me of the Three Hunter Gimli sculpt, which is a nice hint of the family resemblance.

There we go! Six dwarves down, seven more (Balin, Bombur, Fili, Oin, Nori, Dori and Ori) to go!

Thanks for reading!

This update's for you then, Chris:

I finished painting Gandalf today, I'm pretty chuffed with the way he turned out:

Image

Image

I attempted to give him a more worn look than the GW version, drybrushing and highlighting his cloak rather than layering. I used Codex Grey (as opposed to my Lotr-Gandalfs, that I usually used Shadow Grey on) and I'm pretty pleased with the general look.

Image

Thorin's Company: 2/15

Oh I also started painting Thorin, going with a darker blue for his leather armour than GW (mainly because I don't really own any proper blues and had to mix them myself):

Image

Will hopefully have more conversions up tomorrow! Thanks for looking in!

Great job! All those new poses are really cool, I like Dwalin the best. Keep up the good work!

I'm really liking these a lot! That's my biggest problem; I'm just in the middle of painting a whack of Gondor elites and this thread makes me want to fiddle with Thorin and Co.

Very good work! This is the sort of sculpting I started doing before going pro!
Only feedback I can really give is less is quite often more. The subtle changes are the best ones. Also, really consider your anatomy, the arm you sculpted for Gandalf is wonderful, but a little long. You'll only really notice if you are into your anatomy for sculpting.

A good one for checking a pose is correct is to make it into a silhouette. Hold it up against a light and see if the pose looks 'right'.

Hope that helps!

Thank you very much for the detailed feedback, goblin_king! I really appreciate you taking the time to give me some advice!

Gandalf's sculpted arm is actually the same length as his other one, I checked with a piece of string whilst I was converting him as I was unsure, too. Maybe the angle in the photos makes it look a bit too long... However, the trick with the silhouette helped me a lot today, when I sculpted a new arm for Bombur (pics to follow soon), so thanks for that!

Sorry Lord Hurin! But I'm sure Thorin and his dwarven friends will still be there once you've finished Gondor :P

I like Dwalin, too! Although my take on Bombur 'takes the biscuit'...

EDIT: Whoops, forgot to link my pics:

Thorin's finished now:

His skin isn't as tanned as it looks in those pics and I'm pretty happy with the way he turned out, especially his oak-shield.

Excuse the double post but I have more pics! Today was a very frustrating conversion day; the remaining, single-piece dwarves have been extremely difficult to convert and have needed quite a bit of lateral thinking (and greenstuff):

BOMBUR:
Image

I removed the ladle from his left hand and attached the meat cleaver from his right. I then removed his right arm entirely (except for the glove and fingers) and sculpted him a new arm - easier said than done! Then I added a greenstuff pastry/donut-thing so it looks like he's eating, which, let's be fair, is what Bombur does best.

ORI:
Image

I found Ori extremely hard to convert, so I only made a few little changes - less is more! I added a stone to his slingshot and repositioned his legs slightly to make him look more dynamic... I think.

Image

FILI:
Image

Image

Fili and Kili are the most athletic of the dwarves, so I think I can get away with this slightly over the top pose. I repositioned Fili's left arm and right leg to make it look like he's charging across the battlefield - to assist his brother, perhaps?

Only four dwarves remaining: Oin (started him today - NIGHTMARE), Dori (could actually prove an easy conversion, his arms are only attached to the body at the shoulders), Nori and Balin (oh Balin... Your conversion haunts me).

Thanks for looking in and for commenting, I really appreciate all your interest in this little project!

Do remember, you don't HAVE to convert them all!
They all look wonderful so far, Fili is a little awkward though I will say!

Keep them coming, be brave and you'll do well in time.
