Very nice painting as usual. The teeth on the orc captain add tons of character, they just make him so intimidating. The pattern on the shields and the banner are great. My only criticism is that the colours seem too bright for the dirty, grimy servants of Mordor.

Thank you! Ref the brighter colours, these are the 'elite' Orcs - the others currently awaiting painting will have a predominance of browns, khakis, etc on the clothing, so they'll hopefully look suitably 'grim and grimy' :-D

Apologies for thread necromancy, but I hoped that adding to the old thread would be better than clogging up the board with a new one.

I FINALLY got some work done on my LOTR collection, after a break of over a year. This was prompted by my entry into one of the painting competitions earlier in the year with an Elf spearman model and also the new Hobbit movie rekindling my Middle Earth interest again.

So, here are a few pics of the growing Elf army. I am really pleased with the way the conversions to the Galadhrim Court models worked - adding the High Elf shields and the steel spears has worked well, I think and they make great High Elves now (you may or may not remember that this project is never intending to see light of day at a tournament, so I am using whatever models I like. Also, they will be used with other rule sets, so the heroes on larger bases are designed to accommodate that.)

Here are the first 6 spearmen:

I have also realised that, as I am painting both Elf and Orc forces, I need to speed up the way I am painting some of these models. As a result, when I saw 24 painted Morannon Orcs on EBAY, I realised that this might be a way to achieve that! They were painted in a basic base coat, ink wash and dry brush style, but were reasonably neat. I figured that I could add highlights to tidy them up, so clicked 'Buy It Now' and hoped for the best! Here's an Orc straight off EBAY...
Image

Here's a couple of close-ups after 'surgery' (highlights and a coat of 'Dullcote' and a major re-base to bring them in line with my other models)
Image

Quite a difference, I think you'll agree! 16 models completed in 2 evenings isn't too shabby either! There was a compromise, as I didn't really want 'uniformed' Orcs, but, well...beggars can't be choosers and the speed of painting far outweighed the concern over red tunics!! I still have 8 to paint, by which time the Orc force will have increased by 400% in a mere week's work!!

Here are a few 'action' shots of the whole collection to date:
ImageImageImageImage

I hope that you like the update. I plan to complete 6 Elf swordsmen after Christmas ( I started these a few weeks back), plus the additional 8 Orcs. Hopefully, after that I should be able to get a bunch of Uruk Hai (pretending to be Gundabad Orc or 'bodyguard' Orc types) done as well (they have already been started as well), plus some extra heroes, as long as my interest holds, as I have lots of projects on the go!!

great work man - the detailed painting on the elf shields is fantastic...And you've also inspired me to finally paint my Burhdur model after seeing yours completely done and looking so fierce....

Also thanks for the detailed tutorial at the head of this WIP thread - a very helpful step by step guide for novice painters like myself...

Keep the pics coming ! :)

I've never been totally sold on the Galadhrim guards either but wow have you made them look incredibly appealing. Wonderful colour scheme, the detail on Haldir is eye popping. Love the free hand work on his under skirt.
And your scenery is equally fantastic, really draws you in. Got me psyched!

It's an old GW Warhammer fantasy eagle, 1990s vintage.

Thanks to all for the positive feedback. :-D

Here is my latest model for the Elf army.

I have been rather inspired recently by Feanorthenoldor's lovely Elf army, especially his choice of a Dark Sword miniature for his Fingolfin, which looks absolutely brilliant!

This made me remember the Dark Sword Elf that I bought a couple of years ago as a hero for the army but never finished. This picture shows the model I purchased. I did NOT paint the pic below...it's the pic you'll see if you search him out in their webstore and if you Google the model.

Image

It's a lovely sculpt and beautifully painted. However, I felt that, great sculpt though it is, it lacks the 'grit' needed for a commander of Rivendell/Eregion. So I decided that, despite having sculpting skills that are best described as somewhere between 'dodgy' and 'barely adequate' that I would add a chain-mail shirt beneath all that lovely plate armour. I also felt that, as he is holding his sword one handed, he needed a shield. So I chopped off his left hand and added a Last Alliance Elf shield from the bunch I found on EBAY a few months ago. Then I set to work painting him.

He was the HARDEST model I have painted in ages! The details are so finely sculpted and so shallow that the 'dip and highlight' technique was definitely not the best to employ. Still, I stuck with it and here are the results. I'm actually quite pleased with it overall.
The photos aren't brilliant as lighting is poor, but I have tried to show him off as best I could. To be fair, the close ups don't look that great...the ones where he is in amongst his troops make him look better. He's definitely a 'best viewed from gaming distance' model!! :-D
There aren't any rear view shots yet as while doing the pics, I realised that I had 'blobbed' blue paint onto his mail shirt and that is very clearly visible from the rear!!! I have now corrected this and hopefully can post a new pic or two over the weekend when I can photograph in daylight.

Enjoy the pics..

wow andy, absolutely brilliant!

I didn't even notice the sculpted chainmail you added in because it looked like the original sculpt.

I obviously also love the color scheme btw :P
