Good morning everyone,

I have an update that features a model that is a good deal different from the style of gentlemen that I've been painting recently. This is my first completed LotR baddie; I present the delightfully corpulent Goblin King of Goblintown!

Image

This was a very fun model to paint because I've always loved blending skin and, well, the Goblin King has plenty of skin to go around! Also, large models are downright cathartic to paint after detailing dwarf faces and eyes. :D

And a little up-close shot. (Watch out for the hurl!)

Image

I have my first batch of Warriors of Erebor, Fili, Kili, and Bombur completed and ready to photograph as well, so hopefully in the next few days I will be able to share some Erebor folk.

Thanks for looking and happy painting, all!

Good morning all,

I had been working on what I considered to be rather tedious painting recently (batch painting Goblin Town goblins in mass - nothing particularly intricate or exciting there)... So after getting the first 24 goblins done, I decided to treat myself to something a little more interesting. I love the Boromir in Ithilien model. The extended edition scene that it captures of him, Denethor and Faramir is one of my favorite scenes from the second film.

This is very much a work in progress, but as this is the WIP forum, I figured I would share. The only things I would consider to be more or less done are the front of the shield, face and hair. Clothing and armor have barely been touched.

On that note, kind of a poll the audience: This particular version of Boromir, while I love the theme, really has a very bland color palette. Going by movie stills, he's wearing a black shirt that spills out from underneath dark plate. He has the ends of said black shirt coming out from underneath his armor. His cloak is also black. I've seen the model painted well, but even then, it ends up looking rather boring because it's just so many dark colors against one another (and for fellow proponents of blending, black is an irritating color to work with in general; highlighting easily ends up making things look gray, lack of highlighting or edgelighting just looks lazy to me). My question is: do you think it goes against the spirit of the realistic, replica-style of the LotR minis to embelish certain parts of their appearance? If not, what color could we add to Ithilien Boromir to make him a little more chromatic?

One idea I had was to do the visible parts of his shirt in a cream/white color to stay within Gondor's palette and possibly freehand designs on it.

More updates to follow, as I can't wait to get home and put a brush back to Gondor's finest! :boromir

I personally am not bothered by changing color-schemes for models. I painted my copy of this model with a bright blue cloak, it really brightened up the model, and (to me) still felt appropriate for Gondor. I also trimmed his armor in gold

If you'd like you can find it in my WIP here (the pics are near the bottom of pg 2)

Hm, you know, the blue does end up looking very vibrant. This has me leaning towards embelishment. :)

I have this same model and I was thinking of doing his cape in a dark red. Much like elendils, I don't think there is anything wrong with that.

I'm considering the same. Dark red seems to be a semi-occuring supporting color for Gondor (Nuemoreans, Aragorn's Elessar habiliment, etc).

The white / cream look that James has done is very fitting with Gondor. It can be a symbol of the white tree and as he is a captain, no more of a colour would do.
