The airbrush and compressor I want are the same price as Smaug....
The base is taking shape nicely, some nice variation in the gold colours.

With a big brush... well maybe. But you won't be getting the same results than with an airbrush.

Be aware that I get my airbrush config for 150€ , not really necessary to buy so expensive with your first one. Specially because you are probably going to treat it bad in the beginning, until you learn.

OMG, That SMAUG is SO BIG.

Completely agree Argish, I have been using this compressor for 5 years now and has never let me down, gives a good constant supply of air

The Iwata Eclipse CS, also had it for around 5 years and have never had to replace parts, it gets alot of use for other work (Tamiya kits, ceramics, all sorts over the years) Most model sites recommend this brush.

I think you could paint Smaug without an airbrush with out problem, the range of Tamiya Spray cans are excellent and a large colour choice for getting a good all over base colour. Personally I would get Smaug first whilst he is in production, even if you put him under the bed for a few years.

Undercoating started, this is a good time for the primer to show any flaws in the gap filling, the neck join needs some attention, apart from that it feels good to get some paint on him.

Good choice of colours for the base coats. This will set it off nicely.
One other thing, this looks incredibly impressive.

Looking good so far harfoot. Are you painting him with an airbrush, spray cans, or brushes only?

Wow this is so impressive. Even with only primer and some patches of colour on head and neck he already comes to life. Absolutely fantastic!

Airbrush the bulk painting, starting with Vallejo Black Primer, then various Vallejo reds and sand colours. Then shading and blending with the airbrush, finishing off all the fine detail, large scales will be by hand. 40 hours+ I am guessing.

Thanks so much for taking the time to photo and post each step you are taking. 8) It really helps people like me who have not handled such big models before. I've come to realise what a huge amount of work it is just to get to the priming stage!

It is looking great so far. Air brushing is a complete mystery to me so not sure how you will blend with this method. Time for me to do some google searches I think!

All the best with the next stages. And Happy 2015!

What scares me about this is how much the proud owner has to do to strengthen, refine and mask the joints. The opportunity to make horrendous errors is there....
And I said all along I would have preferred hard plastic over resin.

Same here , it's not a cheap kit and the amount of work just to get it to fit together would worry the hell out of me . I think of resin to be a material more suited to small scale cottage industry producers not someone as large as GW

Nice progress and the amount of work going into him is commendable, keep up the good work.

Thanks for all the comments everyone, done some work on the wings, they are far from finished, for instance the black lines need toning down and some light washes to bring out the surface detail.

My plan is to get the body painted to a similar level then attach the wings and tail along with the spikes. Nearly finished the base, never painted so many treasure chests in my life. As mentioned these wings are far from finished just WIP

This is base coated with Vallejo Black Primer, then Vallejo "Fire Red" then would you believe a flooring polish called "Johnsons Klear" a well known product in the Tamiya/Airfix modelling world. It basically will stick to anything, is crystal clear and allows you to apply oil washes on top that don't dig into the acrylic paint.

An oil wash is a mix of "low odour" oil thinners with Black and Brown quality oil paints mixed in. Them another coat of clear, its applies really thinly so does not block any detail

Other work I have been busy today painting UKfreddybears amazing minatures, i recommend everyone who has not got these to get them, brilliant sculpts, full of character that make you want to paint them, again these are WIP

You forgot your time spent update ?
The wings are slowly taking shape nicely and your palette is a good choice. Are you using W&N oils ?

Oops, thanks Mally

TIME SPENT 19 HOURS includes the base

A mix of W&N and Daler Rowney, both are good products IMO

Thanks for the kind word Guys, Sorry i have not used GW new named colours, i have been changing over slowly the last 3 years to Vallejo and "the army painter" so i don't know what GWs current colours are.
