I actually haven't had as much time to paint as I thought, but I did manage to finish two miniatures, and I got some slightly better pictures of the horn blower. The highlights on the rider of Rohan's cloak look a little more extreme in the picture than in real life.ImageImageImageImageImageImageImageImageImageImage

Let me know what you guys think :)

The blue tartan on the Gondorian looks great! Is he meant to be from Lamedon?

Thanks! He isn't from any particular land, I was just trying things to take it to the next level since it was for a painting challenge, and I thought it would be fun to try. I originally had a completely different color scheme, but it looked awful, so I had to redo it at the last minute.

Quick update, I received a mounted Rohan Royal Guard for christmas so I decided to go ahead and paint it.ImageImageImageImageImageImage

I only realized after I tok the pictures that a white background may not have been the best idea for this figure. There are a few spots on the horse that need to be touched up, especially the front and back, but overall I'm very happy with how it turned out. This is definitely one of my favorite miniatures that I have painted so far. In fact, I'm thinking about ordering some foot versions because I want to paint more of them.
Anyway, please let me know what you all think, and I would love some criticism too. I feel like maybe it looks a little thick or grainy, or just plain sloppy, or I'm just worrying about nothing. So any help would be most welcome.

Nothing sloppy about that paint job that i can see. I would definitely have a go at taking pics of this model with a dark background. Need a better look at it.

Not only a nice paint job but I love that spear in the Easterling (though I really shouldn't).

Nothing wrong. Its a nice model, the royal guard himself is well painted, the base very colourful and great use of a casualty :yay:

I had to look twice at the photo to check it was yours, different set up. The painting looks great.

That does look very effective and top paint job to boot.
Although I do prefer the darker blood on other parts of the model, to the lighter red blood splattered on the Easterlings sword.

Thanks guys, guess it's just me. @Oropher, the blood on the sword does look a bit bright, but I actually like it a lot.
So as you can tell I'm messing around with different picture set ups, again. I've got a couple more ideas I'm going to try later today, I'll try and post some pictures then. I guess you could say taking better pictures is my new years resolution.
I've also decided to focus more on painting at a display standard. There have been several times where I know I've held back because I always had the thought "what if I want to use this mini for a game?" in my head. But I haven't played a game in about two years, and even if I do play a game, my brother has plenty of miniatures I could use.
We'll see how this goes :)

Start doing a few display standard figures, get your standard improving and then see how you feel about which figures becoming gaming and which for the cabinet.

Thanks for the advice, I'll be sure to give it a try. I should clarify that I will still paint some to a lesser standard, mostly the rank and file figures. I will put more effort into them than the usual gaming paint job, but I defiantly enjoy painting display pieces much more.
And the first step towards improving is taking better pictures. I messed around with a couple different set ups, and thanks to some help from a couple articles from Massive Voodoo, I think I've found a pretty decent set up. Here are some of the pictures I took with it. Sorry the middle two are a little out of focus.Image

I managed to reduce some of the unnatural highlights caused by the lights which I think was one of the biggest problems with my previous pictures. There are a few shadows however, so there is still some tweaking that needs to be done.
Also, on the miniature itself, you can see that I forgot to fill in some of the gaps on the horse :x
Do these pictures look better to you guys?

Here is an Easterling drummer I just finished. There are a few things that I could've done better, but overall I'm happy with it.ImageImageImageImage

C&C welcome

The painting is excellent as usual. The angle he's standing at looks a little strange from the side view but looks spot on from the front. I have a lot of easterlings coming up and will use this thread as inspiration.

See you racked up some points in the league bro. Well deserved!
