REALLY nice job. Especially with the color scheme on the Goblins and Gimli. I liked how in one pic u could barely see Gimli because of the light flashing off him. I have to agree with the others, though; it would look much better (and be more true to the books and the movie) if the Balrog was in a different diorama, below, or perhaps above Balin's Tomb. If above, you could still have the pieces of rock falling down from where he's stepped. :) But other than that, I think it's utterly superb! :D

Thanks for all the positive feedback guys :-D

I haven't made much progress in the last few months. Have worked out the terrain for the Balrog bit of the diorama and will start that soon. On the other side of the diorama - above the tomb - I will put a cave drake (in a cave most likely!) and I have base coated that.

The drake fitted together pretty well. A bit of green stuff needed though. Glad it doesn't show up too much.

What colour scheme do you think I should try? I like the GW painted greenish/blue (or is that bluish/green), but maybe there is something better to try. Not many painted drakes on the web to use for ideas.

Maybe the usual color of a draon a mix of red and gold or even colors to make him like a dragon of water

Thanks Hilbert - I thought about red. I've got another diorama planned with dwarves and a dragon and the dragon was going to be red/gold in that one so I'll try something different for the drake I think. What are the 'dragon of water' colours? I could have the drake standing in front of an underground pond....hmmmm...gollum was going to be in the scene too....double hmmmm...

Very nice... The most would be a mix ofblue and Green... A mix of enchanted blue and dark angels green or ice blue on the dragon and dark angel green on the edges of it's scales(This one will take more time but it would be worth it...)

Hi Mastermanje
Sorry for the late reply. Haven't really been taking much notice of this thread lately. Do you mean the pillars in the actual tomb itself where they form rounded arches? Do you want to know how I made them or how I painted them?

Made - using Hirsts Arts moulds - if you have a look back through the thread I give the mould numbers to make the pillars/arches.
Painting - pretty straight forward - undercoat black, drybrush dark blue/grey, drybrush light grey. Just kept drybrushing until I got the colour I wanted.

Hope this helps???

Awesome thread! I really like the colour schemes, especially the ones for the goblins!
Where did you get those pillars from? Or did you make them yourself?

Thanks for the interest. It's been ages since I have updated this thread and I need to. I have made a bit more progress. Anyway, the pillars are from one of the Hirst Arts moulds. If you look back near the start of the thread I list the mould #s I used the make the scenery. Will try to post pictures of more progress soon!

OK, it's been ages since I updated progress on this. Basically that's because I haven't made much progress. However a few things have happened.

First, I finished the cave drake for the monsters painting challenge and that will go into the diorama on one side. I've done a bit of terrain for this, a small waterfall at the back, and at the front I plan to have a pond with gollum sitting on a rock in the middle (he's the shiny metal thing in the foreground of the photo).

On the other side of the diorama goes the balrog who will be swooping down onto the tomb. I've made the metal strut that will hold the balrog in place. I will sculpt flames to cover the strut so there is a path of fire leading to the feet of the balrog. At the left of the balrog (on the top level of the diorama) I will put some broken terrain with lava flows etc.

Mostly, I just need to make the terrain to finish this off, but I haven't been in a terrain mood much lately.
