That was when it was covered in gems and gold, methinks.

My understanding was that his scales on the underbelly were gems and gold...

Just encrusted with gems and gold because he was laying on the pile of treasure for so long that they became stuck to him.

That's right, Bilbo. :) This is my version of Smaug when he arrived at the lonely mountain (and toasted a load of dwarves). He has not yet lain on piles of treasure, so his belly is free from gold and gems.

Ahh right!

Because of this article I began to read the Hobbit last night. Well, the graphic novel version...

Just gotten to laketown, so I'm jogging my memory! :)

This WILL get cast up, right?

Cos I will need one to put in my display cabinet at my new house you know? I think my other half would like that... :-D

Aha! So old Toasty is completely vulnerable from below! Yee-hah! Thorin will be soooo pleased!

I am a swine...

And you are a sculpting genius, yes with the patience of a saint (Saint Elsewhere, patron saint of dragon sculptors...)

No, Brent. I lost count! I've had to redo bits aswell, so I can only make a wild guess at the mo'. If I'm feeling crazy enough when it's done, I'll tot up the total then, just for the sheer madness of it! :dizzy:

So... considering this is your first attempt...
Is there anything you're gonna change when starting the second attempt?

(I hope you didn't take my previous comment too serious... well, nor this one.. )

Cue Nate getting hold of a very small paintbrush and numbering each scale individually...

You do realise that if you had used some artistic license to make him more of an Eastern Dragon, then you could have made his forelegs smaller, meaning less scales.

Fewer scales, John, fewer.

Ah, no matter. The scales on the legs shouldn't take too long, once I've got the musculature sorted.

Wings? AIGT. I'm looking forward to them though. Ideas are bubbling around in my head about how I might make them.
