Thanks Kev and yes it does look clean, the photo hasn't really picked up the mud splatters around the legs and the lower hand for some reason, and they are actually quite dark on the figure ?!?. The splatters you see on the left chest are the colour of those on the rest of the figure
That aside it is still relatively clean on purpose as I'm waiting until this is in place on the diorama then I can crack out the pigments to merge each of the figures into the diorama.

Thanks Paul. The photo doesn't show but his eyes are bloodshot as I figured it would help with a menacing look.

Hi Mally, you know what I think of the elves, absolutely brilliant, no question about that!

The goblin king looks really nice as well, it's good to see him in a different colour scheme. The transitions are a bit rougher than usual, but it adds some nice texture to the skin. The loincloth is lacking a bit of contrast in my opinion, it depends on whether or not it will be covered by the pigments anyway. I like that the blisters and eyes pop out, it's a nice contrast!

Yes the loincloth will be hit with pigments so I didn't go too far, plus I need to watch the time I spent on this.
It's a big figure and the deadline is the end of July !
I went for the texture to the skin, I'm pleased you noticed and IRL it has better contrast than the photo suggests.

Tested myself to some speed painting. Here's my result in 2 hours, hmmm maybe not the best but it was quick.
I didn't actually realise how small this thing was until I started, its minute. Cant wait for the scribe !!!

Next up Bofur, very poor photo showing nothing of the detail.
Does anyone know if a light tent will help ?
I only have one overhead daylight light, is this an issue ? Would I need a couple of lights either side shining in horizontally ?

Bofur looks good nonetheless! But I must agree with DMS, the bases are a bit empty.

Never had much luck with a light tent Mally, Pictures either come out slightly over exposed or too dark due to not enough light.

Bofur looks ok mate although not up to your usual high standard. The highlights look a little rougher than they usually do with your paint jobs. Its tough trying to paint a model quickly I can relate to that. I just finished my own speed paint with champions of Erebor Dori, roughly 3 hours from start to finish.

Thats the issue Kev, Bofur is up to my usual standard, the photo just makes him look awful.
The highlights are not rough, everything is smooth and just goes to show how much difference a photo can make.
I probably shouldn't have even posted it, but I did to make a point of an area I really struggle with.
I have a £400 camera and may as well not bother with it.

Is it possible for you to photograph outdoors in daylight? The camera or your photography isn't the issue, its the lighting. In all the years I've been painting these things I have never found a way of photographing a mini satisfactorily using an artificial lights source. I've tried the milk cartons, home made light boxes and eventually spend £100 on a professional mini photography studio which was again completely useless and went straight on ebay. No substitute for daylight imo.

Maybe its because its not based that makes it look rougher, the pic seems clear enough but i understand how pictures can sometimes wash a mini out.

Kev I took your idea and photographed in better daylight. It was overcast but this was taken just inside my open french doors. This gives a better example than previous and although not brilliant, its at least a way forward.
I tried different backgrounds and found a darker one worked better. I will have to get a solid black background and see how that works.
