Post subject:  BD's WIP Thread - Galadhrim and Ringwraiths (24 April 2010)

Hi all!

I'm currently working on a 2500 point War of The Ring army for Galadhrim, and followed by either a Mordor or Pure Black Numenorean force of the same size, either way led by Ringwraiths. As I've not got any idea which one I would rather do, I might as well ask now. Which would you all rather see me work on, an all BN and MK army, or a Mordor army with a small BN/MK contingent?

So I'll post updates here whenever I remember to take pictures (I generally tend to forget...), and I'll switch between the two armies as time goes on.

This is the list that I'm building the Galadhrim to:

Celeborn, Lord of Lothlorien
Galadriel, Lady of Lothlorien
Haldir, Guardian of Lothlorien

Galadhrim Warrior Regiment (6 companies) with Shields, Captain, Banner Bearer, Stormcaller and Hornblower
Galadhrim Archer Regiment (3 companies) with Captain and Banner Bearer
Wood Elf Warband (3 companies) with Captain, Banner Bearer and either Glaives or Longbows

Galadhrim Knight Regiment (5 companies) with Captain, Banner Bearer and Shields
Galadhrim Knight Regiment (4 companies) with Captain

Allies:
Prince Imrahil of Dol Amroth

Swan Knights of Dol Amroth (6 companies) with Captain, Banner Bearer and Hornblower (mounted)

Its about 2500 points anyway. Lots of fun to paint regardless!

I'm painting them with an autimn colour scheme, with red / brown / orange cloaks as the focal point from the back, while the Dol Amroth contingent will be painted in the traditional colour scheme.

I'm also repainting my Dark Marshal and Shadow Lord and moving on through my Mordor / Black Numenoreans from there.

I hope to post pictures of my progress soon, once I can get decent pictures of them, possibly tomorrow or in the next few days.

I'm putting together a Lothlorien army myself with Galadhrim and Wood Elves. I'm looking forward to seeing how yours turn out!

I've seen some of your work over on TLA and it looked to be very nice. I look forward to you updating! 8)

Thanks. I'll try to get some photos soon. School is starting for me tomorrow (after two lovely weeks of holidays), but I'll try to keep updating regularly. I'm trying to sort out the lighting for my photography.

Sorry for the double post.

I've been experimenting with my lighting for my photos, and still think I could do better with it, but anyway, I've managed to get some halfway decent photos of the Dark Marshal for you all.

I'll get some pictures of the galadhrim soon (school is hitting me hard and it's only the first day back after the holidays and I'm behind).

I'm not sure which pic is best, but I know which lighting techniques I uses in each, so knowing which pic is best will help me with my experimenting.

He was a test (or at least the horse was) for the plastic Morgul Knights, and I think it turned out really well.

I'd love to hear what you all think!

Picture 3 came out the best I think, but what will help you get better photos is a good light source (also helps a great deal when painting). I picked up a full spectrum desk lamp and since then I've been pretty happy with my photos (and helps me see the mini loads better).

I do my painting in my bedroom, which it well lit, albeit with a few hallogen lights in my ceiling angled towards my painting station, which is but an old desk with very little room for my paints, let alone an extra lamp. Fo my photography, I have a camera (obviously) and a simple LED torch which I shine on the model. Very basic and primitive, and I can't really afford to upgrade (bearing in mind I'm only 15).

The horse looks pretty good. See if you can borrow a reading lamp or so from somewhere else in you house, that's what I do as my resources are also limited, to take pictures with. Using sunlight, go outside or take pictures near a window, could help and you may want to try using some sort of photo editing program to fix up the lighting a little, picasa is free to download from google their auto contrast and such work pretty well, though you'll have to be careful and make sure they aren't distorting anything.

I have had some decent pictures taken in the dining room (gets more sun than any room in the house) although, now that its (nearly) winter, there's not as much sun inside as I'd like.

I'll see what I can do in that regard, however. My concern is the weather at the moment mainly as it's very cloudy, but that wn't last forever!
I'll try and get more pics either today after school, or otherwise they might have to wait until the weekend.

Well, its the weekend, and, as promised, here are some decent pictures of my Galadhrim. There are some pictures of them on TLA, bu they're not quite as good as these ones.
Apologies for the blur on some of them - blame the cat.

Nice posing/conversions! 8)

Thanks! Yes there are a few different poses thrown in, mostly for the commanders of course :-D I'm rather fond of them.

Did a bit more work on the ringwraiths tonight. I have painted the armour on the Dark Marshal on Foot, and one both Foot and mounted of the Shadowlord, as well as his horse.
I've also started the second unit of Galadhrim (3 companies of spearmen to double as Guards of the Galadhrim Court), and have undercoated them and done the basecoat for the armour on half of them. I'll post pict in the weekend, probably on sunday.

I agree, the conversions look really nice Blue Dragon. 8)

Yup, they look good. My only critisicm is that it looks like their mouths are open a bit too wide. Maybe that's just a moulding fault but maybe try and close it slightly as the commanders with open mouths look a bit like screaming banshees. Armour looks very good, though but maybe highlight the face a little more but maybe it's just the camera. All IMO of course. 8)

Thanks guys.

I think you might be right about the faces with too little of a hghlight. I'll see what I can do about it, but the camera probably won't pick up on it though. The open mouths are a different problam, but if I can add teeth in the mouths, then that'll make it look less open.
