Here is some gold I just painted up. I really like the color, seems very royal. I will be basing these guys from the House of Ecthelion, one of the more important houses from gondolin.

Here's how I did it:
Step 1:
-Basecoat: Shining Gold(watered down to about 1:1, and I applyed many layers to get a nice even coat.
Step 2:
-I blacklined a little bit with scorched brown, not to the extent that I blackline my elves with silver armor, mainly because there's not as many overlapping pieces of armor and such.
Step 3: I washed the mini with Devlan Mud. Here's the catch though, this may sound very weird, but before I applied the wash, I dilute the wash itself with a little water. I have found this to give a much nicer shade, especially when applying around 3-4 thinned out wash compared to just one big one.

Step 4: After the wash, I diluted some scorched brown, about a 2:1 water to paint ratio. Then shaded the areas I wanted to be darker, you can clearly see where on this mini.
Step 5: I applied a second shade of purple into the recesses with the same ratio as the scorched brown shade.
Step 6: I simply came back with shining gold to accentuate the shining portions of the armor.

That's it

ps, this is for DMS, I took these pictures outside this time, and I like the product :)

Purple and blue not really my cup of tea, but it still looks great.

The gold is definitely my favourite thing about the mini for sure!

Wow! The gold plate is really well done. Some of the richest gold armour I have seen in ages. The overall paint job is also up to your usual high standards. Well done!! :yay:

However, regarding the scheme, there are some parts I like and some I'm not so sure of...

The purple and blue do go with the gold fairly well, I think. The only question I have over the overall combo is over the white cloak - how did you shade it, as it seems a 'cold' white - perhaps that's the photo though... Maybe a more 'cream-shaded' white would work better with the warm gold?

I personally favour mail being darker than plate armour as it makes for better contrast in my opinion. Realistically, it does tend to lack the shine of plate. So in this case, I'd start with something like tin-bitz as a base coat and limit the pure gold to a very minimal dry brush where the light hits. However, you probably disagree, which is fine, right & proper... :-D

Personally, I'd definitely paint the hands as bare flesh - the same blue as the tunic looks odd to me. If they have to be gloves though, perhaps a warm, rich, deep brown, as that'd go well with gold...

Am not sure about the pike shaft either, but that's because a darker wood or painted shaft is just my preference. Again, it would provide good contrast. Brilliant though your gold is, there is rather a lot of it on the model. A rich mid-brown wooden shaft on the pike would go well with that fabulous gold...

But, all that being said, if you like them as they are, keep them like that. it's what you like that counts. My opinion is a very insignificant consideration really.

How do they look alongside your other Elves? If they are going to take the field together, that's another consideration...

wow, thanks andy, exactly the kind of response I was looking for.

I shaded the white with adeptus battlegrey and some black, the same way I used for my silver armored elves. Maybe i'll try a "creamier" shade for the white, any suggestions for the color?

I prepared the chainmail just like I did with the rest of the armor, maybe for the next mini, i'll push the shade a little more with scorched brown and purple.

I also agree with you about the hands, i'll probably do bare flesh or maybe a black leather, depending what I do with the rest of the colors.

and obviously, my other elves are those fingolfin elves, they'll be fielded together

You could try using a darker base coat for the cloak then highlight up - I used to use bubonic brown (zamesi desert) base, with main highlight of bleached bone (screaming skull) with a final highlight of white on models where I wanted a 'warm' white. That gives a great creamy white, but is time consuming and you'd probably need to wet blend on these models for best effect. I have no idea about glazes or even GW washes, as I never use them...

White is a difficult colour to get right. The rule of thumb is for pure white to be the final highlight, everything else needs to be darker. Be bold with your shading, it will help create a better look.
I also think the gold should be pushed to almost pure silver on the very highest points. You only need a thin line or a touch here and there, don't over do it.
Apply a dark blue glaze to the purple shading, it will help darken it very nicely and push that contrast.
I would regard the gold as about 3/4 done so far.
My personal choice would have been a red cloak to make the gold pop. You could have edged the trim with a gold design.

for my white, I simply base it with the vallejo equivalent to astromican grey from GW, then I shade it by glazing adeptus battlegrey into the shaded area using many layers.

Tbh, the highlighting area is actually the easiest, and the results are quite smooth. I just slowly add more and more white into my basecoat color. Then I finish with some straight white on the edges.

I am also using this picture to help guide my color selections.

I said before that I was going for the house of ecthelion, but I meant glorfindel because of the gold.

That looks great man...the number of steps that you took to paint the gold armour is impressive and clearly shows your attention to detail - well done

I'd agree with others about the blue gloves - it's such a bright blue, it kind of pulls the eyes away a bit from the fantastic gold armour. Perhaps a simple brown for the gloves, or you could even try painting them flesh colored (i.e, gloveless) ? The gold is so good, and then you have bright purple in there along with the white cloak, not sure a 4th strong color like bright blue fits (but if you like it, then ignore all this - ha !)

All in all, your work on this model, and your fantastic work on Fingolfin and his soldiers is inspiring to the rest of us - keep up the great work !

Very skillful job, but the blue contrasts so much with the gold it draws attention towards it at the expense of the face which gets a bit lost in the helmet. Maybe a brown is best. Otherwise it's looking very well, especially the spear shaft.

Wow, that gold is amazing! I do agree with Gandalf the Grey though, I think you should highlight it up to silver. If you did that, I think it would be perfect. I also like the pike, brilliant idea. :yay:
