So I bit the resin, so to speak, and purchased two Citadel Finecast kits. I purchased the Rohan command boxed set (4 figures) and the Great Beast.

When GW announced the switch to resin, a little part of me died. My fears were that the castings would be full of bubbles, seam lines, mismatched mold lines. All the things that can go wrong with resin.

Upon opening the boxes, another part of me died, as all of my fears had now become a reality.

Yes the detail is very crisp, but that does not take away from the fact that the castings are just Devlan Mud. I mean for $40 and $70 respectively, you would except sharp, clean castings. I know. I work with resin all the time. I know what a good, clean casting is. With my two purchases as proof, GW does not.

That being said, I was still excited to get going on these kits.

The Beast
I cleaned it up. Washed it several times to get any mold residue off to ensure a good bond between resin and paint. There were several weak points (holes in the body) that I cleaned up, and did a little putty work to clean up air bubbles. I sanded all the rough areas, and cleaned up the many, many mold lines.

She went together terribly. Horrible matchup. I am going to have to do a lot of putty work on this one.

That is where it stands right now. I am going to go over all the areas I can clean up before I start with the putty.

Here are some pics of the Rohan Command set. The detail is really great. Just a shame for the poor castings. There is a reason why they made liquid green stuff :)

Oh and here is the Mumakil conversion. I cut off the head, repositioned it, supported it with styrene, and then filled it in with Apoxie Sculpt. I am going to prime ever the areas to see where I need to blend it in better.

The Great Beast is a univeral problem until the factory sorts it out. Hard look with the Commanders.

Great job with the Mumak cionversion, much cleaner than my attempt to make that pose. I will await its completion as I believe it will look awesome. Good job.

Thanks! I just put some primer on it. I am worried I may have repositioned the head at too high of an angle. Time will tell :)

What a big holes!
I looked in the finecast thread and it seems to get worser.

The mumak conversion is nice, something I won't dare to convert.

I feel your pain with finecast its looks like the rohan commanders are a bit better quality than the gondorian ones I received. Whats even more a kick in the nads if the other finecast model I own is perfect. Therefore its clearly a problem with quality control and as Lotr will soon become abandoned once again I doubt they care much for the quality of its figure range ....Shame :(

Those are actually pretty good compared to some of the finecast horror stories about! Looks like almost all those problems are easily remedied with a bit of green stuff - I'd rather have that than the awful fuzz we sometimes used to get on metal minis, if I had to have one or the other.

That spear on the other hand... oof. That's some harsh warping. Best of luck straightening that.

The spear I am going to replace with brass rod. I won't have to worry about that warping. Ever.

I made some good progress with the Great Beast and the Mumakil. Just letting them dry a bit. Pics soon.

Coming along really great! I love your attitude of getting on with it and still making a great job of things even with the initial setback. Keep the updates coming!
