I didn't know Dave like many of you did, but I did know Bilbo of the White Tower. Not well, but every single one of my conversions and paint jobs that I ever did have comments from BotWT on them. The comments were always positive, helpful and just plain nice. It's not too far off the mark to say that I wouldn't still be posting here and in the hobby if not for encouraging words regularly given.

So as a tribute I went out and got a Bilbo model that I want to paint and leave near my workspace. I may not ever get a real comment again like I used to, but I can at least look at my tribute and think well of BotWT.

Due to me thinking of him always as a leaver of nice comments, and knowing that I file away all those positive messages in my brain I thought it might be fitting for Bilbo to be standing in front of a massive bookshelf, each book full of page after page of his kind words.

Anyway, here are my WIPs, books out:

And books in:

I know the books are big, but so was Bilbo of the White Tower. Also my modelling skills aren't that brilliant either - though I'm sure he'd say something nice about them!

A worthy tribute! Keep us informed about your progress. I think this thread is as much a statue for Bilbo as your miniature is going to be. :yay:

I know what you are saying about the books being too big......but from what you have there....its works. Yes it may not be in scale, but if you look at the impact of the writings of Tolkien....they are are larger than life. If you look at the impact BOTW had on you...larger than life. So you are completely in scale as far as I am concerned. Nice job. Look forward to seeing how this progresses.

My lovely wife looked after our little hobbit today to give me some extra play time. I finally finished Deus Ex: Human Revolution, been playing a little here and a little there for ages now!

I also got a fair bit of painting done, mainly worked on Bilbo himself today and I think I'm pretty much done:

Front view:

Back view (not that you'll see it when he's in front of the bookcase):

Top(ish) view so that you can see The One Ring:

And the bookcase is coming along too. Painted the shelves etc. and the books are in and waiting for the glue to dry. I went for a slightly messy placement of the books to make it look a bit more like my bookshelf at home rather than the perfectly neat and organised version.

Anyway, there you go, progress is being made. I feel sad every time I work on it, but at the same time feel good about doing it if that makes any sense.

It's a brilliant sculpt, by the way, a real pleasure to paint! I just don't know how I'll get it cut away nicely without ruining the paint job... some care and thought required there I guess.

Excellent work! I would suggets adding some tiny scrolls and maps - on the shelves and the floor, like at Bag End at the start of FotR. here's a pic -

Excellent work on the tribute. Is there a way to show it to his family?
