Janner's Rohirrim - update 9 Mar 13 Grimbold

With plenty of Mordor troops to keep my Gondorian opponent happy. The next project is aimed at his Isenguard force.

Yeah, I know, Rohirrim have a bad rep in the game, but I just love the look.

A modest 500 points to start with. Neither of these two made the list, but I had them hanging around so used them as a tester

Hama

Gamling

The first unit will be Erkenbrand leading 12 Red Shield RoR with throwing spear, less the one carrying a standard. Riders I have, but still looking out for a metal Erkenbrand. I think Finecast are great for conversions, but just prefer my heros in metal

The other half of the army will be Grimbold with 12 WoR armed with throwing spears less another one with a standard.

I've 12 points spare at the moment. So might upgrade a couple of riders to Sons of Earl, but I'll still do a full batch of twelve as I've a 750 point army with Eomer and more RoR in mind.

I'd upgrade your Warriors to Helminga's instead. You're already taking Grimbold, and you could use the Strength boost.

A supporter of the noble Rohirhim is always welcomed. (It is interesting to notice that although Rohan might not be the most competitive army, it is still very much loved and respected.

)

I much prefer your Gamling. He looks properly grim and serious. What I dislike about your Hama is his face. It seems twisted. The rest of the miniature is very good, but unfortunately ones eyes are immediately drawn on the faces.

Is it true that Rohirhim require more time to paint than average?

I guess it's simply the amount of detail, that determines the time you need for painting. I love the Realm of Rohan (because they remind me of vikings in many aspects ^^) but painting the minis sometimes really takes some time. If I think back on the armor of Théoden... ><
So, in general I'd say it's not the Rohirrim themselves that require a lt of time. But many of them are quite detailed (which makes them great minis aall the more! ^^)

Looking good.

It's wonderful (and amazing) to see the resurgence of interest in Rohan.

Helmlingas seem to be a very good option for Rohan if you’re bringing any foot troops. I often find Str3 models having trouble getting enemies off the table simply due to the number of foes you need a ‘6’ against to Wound. The lack of 2handed weapon options means some Str4 troops can be very important.

, nice tests anyway. I got a rohan wip too. (just pointing out, not boasting). Cant wait to see more of Rohirrim and show us your mordor and minas tirith if you dont mind?

@Constantine. Yes, Hama didn't come out so well. A bit too bushy an eyebrow over his right eye perhaps. Still, it doesn't look so severe on the tabletop.

@JW. Yeah, perhaps a little ott on the throwing spears, I could go for another character and two smaller groups of riders. I plan to paint up 12 each of warriors and riders, each led by the characters and take it from there. Sometimes it's good to follow the froth and let the lists emerge in time

Great looking mini's

As for your force, don't forget to paint up some extra's for when a horse valiantly takes a crossbow bolt for their master. If you don't have a spare it is assumed the rider did not survive as well. As you will be going with a mainly TW force, odds are you would probably want to paint up some more throwing spear mini's so you can "cast away" the bow when you dismount, or bowmen if you plan on dropping the shield.

I don't know if you have the points or not to include the SOE's, but I have never regretted bringing my 2 everywhere with me. I find that a SOE on each side of my main mounted hero really adds some much needed punch to the hoards trying to get to him. (They also work great on trolls)

Lastly, if you do decide to grab some SOE's remember the same advice above, they need a foot version as well.

As for the question above about rohan taking much longer to paint, it is unfortunately true if you are attempting to do more than 3 colours

For a normal army, let's say Uruks in this case, 10 points more or less is 1 model. Bam done. Rohan for 12 points give or take for a mounted unit, you have to paint the rider, the horse, and more often than not, the foot version. This is even more complicated by the awesome when done, but pain when you havn't fact that almost all Rohan hero's have a mounted and foot version meaning if you are looking for an excellent job, you have to do it twice.

(insert grumble about GW not making a mounted huntsman and a SOE footman)

You also pointed out very fairly that a photo is not always the best judge of how a model looks in person. Even if you held it in your hands it wouldn't be nearly that "close and personal", and at table distance I bet these look awesome. I try hard to make mine look as good as I can as well but I'm not going for a zoomed in look (and I can't pull it off as well as some others on this board anyway).

The "extra" painting involved in a mounted force (rider, horse, foot) really does add up. I'm going thru that with my Haradrim right now. One of these days I'm going to break down and buy Moria Goblins and get away from all the complex painting for a bit. :lol:

I concur, I started painting goblins two weeks ago, and I can get 6 of them ready in 2 hours. They come out satisfactory. It's a shame butchering a SOE model in order to make a foot version of it

I agree the white horses are hard to get right - they look ace.

Love the red shields and I fancy doing some like that hehe.

more on a modelling note - love the fact you swapped the horse sides to give them alt poses.
