I've decided to build some ents. The armatures are made from the wire you get from champagne bottles, because it's usually quite twisted and also in plentiful supply (or is that just my house?).

Here they are with a bit of Milliput to thicken them up a little.

I would like to use a bit of green Stuff, as per ukfreddybear who is the mentor to follow, in my opinion. Does anyone know how much I'm likely to need? I'm used to working in Milliput but GS seems to be the product of choice for finer details.

The one in the middle will be throwing a rock, the one on the left is squashing an orc.

I seem to recall ukfreddybear uses something different to green stuff. I'm sure if you mail him he will give you the answer.
Lets face it, his sculpting is the envy of most so his advice will be invaluable.

Looks like a good start, I'm looking forward to try sculpting some ents myself later on.

Pro create is like greenstuff but better. It is grey and is what UKFreddybear uses.

Honestly, you may not need it for ents. You need a bit of freedom to sculpt with these big guys and putty's like greenstuff and procreate may be a bit tough and don't blend as well, but thats just my opinion. If you can, get some super sculpy. You will probs get more for your money than the other putty's (I think) and its pretty easy to use AND it never hardens until you bake it (following the instructions on the box). From my experience, wire and milliput will survive the oven, probs not those bases though.

Honestly though, if Milliput is all you've got then it should do the job.

milliput may crack or chip easier if you drop it as it is more brittle than GS or PC, and it also doesn't hold as fine a detail as the other two. It is also much more water soluble, and acts much more like clay in relation to water than GS or PC does. However, milliput should be fine for an ent because you don't need super fine detail.

Got the GS; not sure I like it.

Still, they're coming on. I decided that, rather than sculpt branches, I'd get some from the garden. There is some lichen on him, too. Let's see how it paints up.

I like the face too 8) Nice size I did not realize they were that big.The real twig is a good idea. I like to add parts of Woodland Scenic twist trees as well.

The size of them is a bit of a problem. In the books they're about 14 feet high, or four hobbits. I guess we can go +/- 10%. My latest GW Bilbo is 2cm high, which means ents should be about 8 cm. Two of mine are 7.5 and 8cm high, the one stomping on the orc is 11cm, which makes him about 19 feet high, which is probably on the tall side.

However, in the films they are bigger, I think. I'm guessing that mine would fit in with GW models, but as they'll probably never be tabled next to them, I'm pretty relaxed about it.

As I recall they should be the same size as a troll because trolls are corrupted ents. I usually look up the references but I had too hard of a day. I always think of ents as treemen because I saw the Wizard of Oz long before I read the Hobbit or LOTR. I like them big. An Oldman Willow rather than Treebeard.

Well.. I can't recall that any specific height was mentioned in the Middleearth saga. What I have in mind is more like what's written in the LotR-wiki: "They vary in traits, from everything to height and size, colouring, and the number of fingers and toes. An individual Ent more or less resembles the specific species of tree that they typically guard."

Ah, cool thread. I like the characterful face you've given the first Ent. That's the key to Ent's I think is character. My larger miniatures I usually bulk out the armature with Milliput as you have pretty much done, then put a final skin of sculpting putty over the entire thing, one limb at a time. 6 inches of green stuff would be more than adequate for the skinning of one Ent, although these days I tend to work with ProCreate.
GW's Treebeard is 100mm tall, so I use him as a size guide. I think the Birch I did was 110mm tall, and GW's plastic Ent is 120mm tall. So I'd say anything between 8 and 12cm high will fit in just fine.

I am sure you are correct. I was going by memory alone. Are Ents wood or do they just look like wood? Don't know have not really thought about it before. Melkoth's imitation sounds right. I remember a discussion about orcs not being a corruption of elves some where too. I will read up on it when I get the chance. 8)
