Post subject:  JamesR WIP Concerning Hobbits finished! (pg6)

I finally decided to start my WIP thread, after delaying several, several times. My first project I'm working on is re-painting my old MoM boxed Cave Troll, the normal grey was too boring so im changing it up as I actually play Moria fairly often now.

I wanted to ask tips/advice on how to improve the bloody look of his face, obviously his basic skin has several more coats to completeion but this is a good point at which i can edit the blood

One more shot to give a better angle of the blood on his face

I would begin by filling the seams on the arms before going any further on the painting - there are mould lines visible and a stub on the left elbow where it was attached to the sprue - these should be removed carefully. While this is an albino troll (full marks for the novel idea by the way), you need to use some darker colour or a wash to reinforce the depth of texture and folds on the skin and face.

I agree with Dorth. The idea of an albino troll is awesome, but filling the gaps would improve the quality of the model a lot, as well as scraping of the mould lines and the "thing" he has above his left cheek...
For the blood: I'd do a first layer of Dark Flesh and then light it up with Blood Red, followed by pure Blood Red. That's how I paint fresh blood at least..

One general question concerning your troll? HAve you basecoated it before you started the painting?

Thanks for the tips.
For filling the gaps should i use the liquid green stuff? Ive never used it so idk to what degree of effectiveness it works

Edit: I actually did base-coat it, I had the model painted like the ones in the Moria Source-book and then with the new basecoat I used a mid to light grey because I didnt want the extreme light that a white base-coat brings, and the difficulty of painting bleached bone on a black undercoat just sucks all the fun out of it lol

For bloodstains get yourself some Tamiya clear red paint. Use it straight from the pot and then when its dried take a little badab black and paint into the center of the bloodstain. Finish off with a coat of gloss varnish to give it a wet appearance.

The bloodstains can be painted on after the rest of the models paint job is complete.

I would not use liquid green stuff on those seams - they are too big. A tiny amount of the greenstuff putty rolled out into a thin string and then press it in along the seam. Blend it in before it sets, give it about 24 hours and undercoat, paint and jobs done :)

Nice idea, coming along nicely so far 8)
I'd just say it needs some shading and those seams do really need to be filled :)

@ElfLover thanks for the compliment

@Dorthonion thanks for the knoweldge I have almost no experience with green stuff so I appreciate not having to just buy it blindly.

@DMS thank you for the tutorial bit, itssomething I've never done before

Another tip: Remove the moldlines (e.g. at the arm) with a file before continuing painting.

After a short break from painting LotR (in which I began my Soviet Army for Bolt Action) I've begun again with my Haradrim army, specifically the Serpent Riders and Serpent Guard. Here's my current progress on my most recent one

Nice paint around the eyes, that mascara look is very fitting. The reds seem to be coming along nicely.

I did want the area around the eyes to look darker, more of a war-paint to look serpent like but I always struggle with the area around the eyes.

The serpent rider looks already now much better than the troll! The red colour is very cool, I like the warm looking. The face is also painted very good, perfect eyes! I am looking forward to seeing it finished!

The use of the gold is really setting this figure off. Nice work.

Post subject:  Re: JamesR WIP Harad and Goblins

Took a quick break to paint up a couple of my new Goblins, maybe for the warbands challenge I'm not sure yet. They are mostly done but I really like how they look. I'm planning on darkening the Goblin King's armor with a little rust and brightening the captain's chainmail just a hair with another drybrush
