Well, to be honest I did not think I would start a Work in Progress topic here on The One Ring, although I started one on a Dutch forum.

I am Niek (It's a dutch name..) and I've been painting miniatures for about some years now.

As the subject already suggests, this will be a W.i.P thread about the Elves of Greenwood the Great. This does not mean that I won't show pictures of other mini's I painted (and am painting  ).

I really like how you painted his clothing, especially the green

The mottled colors are very effective. Good job!

He is nice, maybe some washes on the flesh or some watered down paint in the recesses would make him pop?

I like everything about him-particularly the tone of his green robe which looks very realistic and natural, and his crown.
My two criticisms are for his skin, which looks spotty and darker than a fair elven lord's should be, and with his base which albeit nice as such, it doesn't fit with the imagery of a forest or of Elven halls.

Many, many thanks!

@Constatine and Light of Elendil: Yes, the skin. I agree with you on that. The thing is I'm a little scared that if I give his hands and face a light wash and after that a lighter higlight I will mess up. But I think I will give it a try.

And he's still not finished though, I hope that what I had in mind to do with the base will go as planned.

I think your paints in general look slightly too thick, and it obscures detail a bit on the miniature. Maybe try to using smoother mixed paints?

I agree with Hollowcrown, it will make a difference to the finish.
The base on the second photo looks great and at the rangers together look the business.

Well, I haven't been able to paint for a while. That's why I'll update with just a picture of a painted Giant Eagle.

And I hope that I'll be able to update with pictures of my painted Mirkwood Rangers!!!

nice eagle and nice avatar! Both are equally awesome.

Well, thank you. The avatar is... no, I'm going to change the avatar in something more personal, something like a drawing of me as an elf or something.

The eagle is very good - the highlights on the head manage to make it look even more focussed than normal (I like eagles :))
Thranduil will be one of those almost impossible minis - I have the DOS Chronicles book and looking at the lavish costume, with the details and the metallic threads.... very, very hard to mimic in 28mm.
The rangers are growing on me (not literally) - I like the kneeling pose - that one is tracking something through the forest.

Thank you to! I've got the Chronicles book too, and yes, it is to much for 28mm. But, as I would say, whenever there is a new Thranduil model released: I will try it again, but much better!

This is one of the best painted eagles I've seen; you should have painted him for this month hobby challenge. No doubt you would get quite some votes!

Post subject:  Re: The Elves of Greenwood the Great.(Update 11-2-2014)

Oh my, It really has been a long time since I updated this thread.
And that makes a good reason for an update!

This update consists only of Palace Guards, about six pictures of them.

Keep in mind these are WIP pictures (And a bit outdated, really).

Again: These models are not the same at this moment (well some parts) as they are in these pictures, keep that in mind. Thank you.

my first thought was: warriors of the dead ^^
they seem a bit colourful, but i'm looking forward to seeing them finished :)

I eagerly await further updates of your Palace Guard, they are off to a nice start. Perhaps you could find a way to unify the colours somewhat. A light brown wash maybe? As for that Eagle...wow, you certainly took it up a notch on that one. Keep at it!

Well, to be honest. I've been adding some brown tones to the leathery parts of the miniatures and it works really wel.. I'm not done yet, but it works. Then I'm planning to let the spears be black, as for the sword hilts, and give them a dark greyish higlight. With the speartips and swords being silver. The Boots will be black too, with a hint of brown and grey.

And I think the bases will be the finishing touch.

Oh and it really brings a contraste in the army: Between Thranduil's grey elven cloak and the read cloaks of the Palace Guards, it makes them (and Thranduil) really stand out. I plan to paint 11 more Palace guards the same way.

And thanks!

How did you paint the shields?
They look amazing!

The rest of the mini looks great as well but I'm particularly interested in the shields.
