Hey all :)

I got into this hobby a few years ago, but after a break of a couple of years, am now back! Before I took a break, I stripped all my old models, so I now have a whole heap of unpainted miniatures. Recently, I started painting some of them, so I thought I'd show you my work here.

First up is a company of Guards of the Galadhrim Court with Rumil and Haldir:

Next up is my Mines of Moria Fellowship. Now I must say, these aren't the easiest to paint well (so many flat surfaces :shock: ):

I tried to base them in a pellenor fields kind of style. Finally, I took all nine models and placed them on a display base (can it be called a plinth, since its really just an offcut of a shelf? :? ) The 'Heroes of the West' sign is aged with tea staining. Personally, I love this piece, and I am really happy with how they all look together. :-D

Since this is my first post on here, I must mention what a fantastic site this is, with a wonderfully friendly and helpful community :) The site is just full of people that absolutely love this hobby, and really, what more could you ask for? :yay:

Sorry about the amount of pictures though, I myself love looking at pictures of miniatures, so I hope you all do too, but if its a problem, let me know and I'll ease up :) I still need to get the hang of this camera too, so hopefully the photos will improve.

Lastly, comments and criticisms are highly encouraged! :)

welcome Newcomer. those are beautifully painted models. the colours and techniques are outstanding. however, something that stands out immediately is the flat colour used on the flesh. with a bit of weathering or drybrushing a paler flesh tone on top these woul truly be top-notch, especially seeing as they're your first in years. the pupils of the eyes are a fraction too big (always the hardest part i understand) gives them a stary look. sometimes even light eyebrows can alleviate this.
on a lighter note, may you enjoy your stay here, the best community i have found on the internet. full of help and praise.

I had completely forgotten about the existence of the Guards of the Galadhrim Court. HotW and MoM I have but not GoGC - there is a bit of an underlying movie/book purist about me.

Thanks for the advice :) I actually have two layers of highlights on the flesh, however I'm not sure if they come across too well in the pictures. Any elves I paint actually get three layers, because they're just a bit paler than your average folk. Any advice on improving my skills at flesh, particularly faces and eyes, is very welcome, as I believe these are the first thing that people are drawn to when they look at painted models. Also, about the eyebrows, how would you suggest to do them? I would be afraid that they would be too dark, and look odd :? Lastly, while I have you, greetings from a fellow Irishman :) I'm actually in Kildare aswell, small world :)

The Heroes of the West are literally just placed on the plinth. The fellowship base was created using a warhammer movement tray and modelling clay. There is a great article on display bases like that in the Tomes of Wisdom, here: http://www.one-ring.co.uk/kb.php?a=55

No painting done today, all building work, as I finally cracked open my EFGT boxset!

I could not (and still can't) get over how detailed everything is in the box. Even though Bilbo's face is only a few mm wide, it is fantastic how he actually looks exactly like Martin Freeman

Similarly, look at Radagast's cloak. When I first say this model painted, I thought it was all freehand, and I was like "bugger, not too great at freehand" but no worries, as it is all sculpted on.

However, I'm not too fond of these sculpted bases that GW seem to be doing. Maybe it'll turn out good, but I like doing my own bases at the minute. Still, we'll see...

So anyway, after a quick read through of the booklets, I started to assemble the models, starting with Thorin's Company

A few hours later, a good few hours later, and this is what we have:

About half of Thorin's Company required some liquid greenstuff, which I'm leaving overnight before I file down. Likewise, the throne had about four big gaps, but again, greenstuff, job done. I must say, even though the invention of liquid greenstuff was to 'fix' initial problems with finecast, it is a very useful thing.

Naturally, I haven't glued the platforms together, so I can rearrange them at will for different scenarios. Also, the models haven't been glued to their bases, as I am going to do wood effect bases for them all later.

Last thing I got assembled today was Radagast, love this model, and really looking forward to painting him :)

So, to-do for tomorrow are the two goblin sprues, the scribe, the two captains and the king. The place will be smelling of plastic glue :x

That is one heck of an introduction to the site. That is some outstanding work you've posted and seeing so many nicely painted miniatures all grouped up like this is a real treat.

A lot of really great stuff! The one thing that did stick out like a bit of a sore thumb for me was Eomer's armour. Especially standing next to Eowyn, whose cloak is superbly highlighted, it seems a little flat and bright. I'd recommend a wash of whatever the brown ink/ stain/ Devlan Mud type product that GW is selling these days. Just on the red bits to tone them down and give them some shading.

I see what you mean. I think, if I remember correctly (I'm not exactly sure, as I painted all nine heroes one after another in about three weeks, so I have forgotten the colours I used :? ) that his armour was done with scab red, then highlighted with blood red. Again, the highlights are a bit more noticeable in person, but looking at it now, I do agree that a wash would do no harm. Thanks for pointing that out 8)

Here's an update anyway with the progress so far today (so many goblins :shock: )

I have one goblin sprue (18 goblins), Grinahh, the goblin scribe and that midget goblin (I think he' a captain?) cleaned and assembled. Again, note that none of the models are glued into there bases, as there bases will be getting a wood effect style, and I tend to attach my miniatures using pins in there feet (I'll show you what I mean when I get painting these :-D )

That is one teensy goblin :x

The goblin scribe was relatively simple to put together (and looks pretty cool), but he needs a tiny bit of greenstuff where he joins his seat

Anyway, hopefully I'll have the rest of the goblins and the King done later, and I'll update this evening showing the full horrible horde :-D

Nice work! I'm still not sure whether I love or hate the Goblin designs and sculpts, but you're certainly moving at an impressive clip.

The end of the day is upon me, so now lets see where I got to:

Basically, the whole boxset is completely cleaned and assembled (assembled for a few games, not 'paint ready').

The big ol' goblin king just needed a teensy bit of greenstuff :rofl:

I am super happy that I bought this set and got back into the hobby :) I think they look awesome now, just imagine what they'll be like when I slap some paint on them :-D Well, maybe not slap.....gently brush some paint on them, should I say :)

Anyway, thanks for all the great comments so far, I hope you're enjoying this thread :) Over the next few days I'm going to try some of the scenarios for goblin town, see can I relearn how to play :twisted: But then, straight into painting! Actually, I'll have to prepare them first, but sure I'll show you that too :lol:

Your Gandalf the White is my favourite, and I'm a real Grey fan!

Radagast model is a lovely one to paint - I really enjoyed that one. Have fun, look forward to seeing your EFGT painted :)
