Hi guys, just getting back into the hobby, really into the sculpting side of it. Thought I'd have a bit of a go at Azog the Defiler as depicted in the new Hobbit trilogy;as I'm a big fan of the character. Anyway here's a few pics of how it's going so far, hope you like it!

Very good, but shouldn't his shoulders be a bit wider?

After spending the day assembling and filling gaps with greenstuff yesterday, I can appreciate the time that's gone in to this! Nice one.

Hi Hill Troll, I'm aware that I made his head a tad large for is body ha, but I didn't think it was worth changing. It's only the third proper sculpt that I've really done, so it's a bit rough around the edges, for instance I plan on changing his lower legs and feet because I'm not a big fan of them at the moment.

Looks amazing! You are quite skilled

This is quite a good effort - well done! The only things that I would pick up on is that he looks a bit chubby in the face and a bit stiff in the legs. It looks strange seeing him with a hand :)

I'm assuming you haven't completed he garments as there isn't much there. I think the main thing for you to fix up next time would just be the pose - it looks like you have 3 different poses which don't quite sit well together. These are the weight appears to be on his left leg but he is leaning right, he is leaning forwards/upright but has right arm back too far (drop the right arm down a bit to match the left and it would be sweet.) And lastly the arms are rather at opposites in a way which sin't comfortable at all as I do it in my room ;)

All very minor "issues" though, so don't be down about it - you should be quite happy with what you have done here you will be a lot better in the near future I imagine!

Hodush, thanks very much for taking the time to review the model :) I do agree with your criticisms, my personal least favourite part is definately the lower body particularly the right leg which doesn't go with the flow of the rest of the body and is slightly longer than the right. I think I'm just going to take this sculpt as a learning process though and hopefully apply what I've learnt to my next sculpt whatever that may be. Oh, and I modelled Azog with a hand as I'm not a huge fan of the metal hand he was given in the film after the battle of Azanulbizar.

Hey if you dislike it I'll gladly take it off your hands lol. Id be proud of this effort. Sure it's "not perfect" but as someone who has literally just began sculpting I'm highly impressed

Thanks very much for the kind remarks JamesR. Not to sure if I'm willing to part with it at the moment though I am quite pleased with it haha

I agree completely, and although I have broken my no-finecast policy and bought the official figure, the reason why I have not yet painted him is because I plan on converting an arm for him, and removing his captain hook appendage.

It's also a Peter Jackson invention, and while I'm happy to stick to the films in terms of imagery I follow the books in terms of plot.

By the time of the Hobbit Azog is dead, because he didn't loose an arm. He lost his head!

Looking good. At this early stage his skin reminds me of Darth Sion from Knights of the Old Republic 2

This is a great sculpt, my only criticism is that he seems a bit short; how much Green Stuff did you use?

Great work- he's really coming alive! I'd suggest adding a tiny bit of pink in with the grey in places, to vary the colour and give him a bit more depth.

Post subject:  Re: Azog Sculpt

Hi everyone, I've got him to a stage where I'm not going to take him much further for now. I'm not too chuffed with how the paint job's turned out to be honest, got myself in the situation where I was adding too many layers and certain areas got to be a bit of a mess. I do plan on removing the paint and maybe starting from scratch at some point but at the moment I'm quite excited about another couple of sculpts which I want to get cracking with ASAP. If I manage to get a couple of resin copies of this model produced would anyone like one to give it a better paint job than I managed?
