So after finally completing my Escape from Goblin Town set and Azogs Warband (consisting of 24 hunter orcs, 6 hunters on fell wargs, 6 fell wargs and Azog mounted & foot)... I decided it was time to get some dwarves that i could pair up with some of the Thorins company in a 500/600 point list.

Here is a picture of 3 Grim Hammers (Just need their bases painted and flocked). What do you guys think? Only been back into the hobby for 6 months and my painting is gradually improving.

These are probably amongst the best dwarf sculpts, they just look so impressive. Lovely painting on them to capture that battle hardened look.

Thanks for the compliment on the paint job Gandalf. I really wish GW had made the grim hammers have a better stat line, as they are an elite looking troop in my eyes. Or even just a simple +1 to their defense as they are in far more heavy armour than warriors of erebor!

Absolutely fantastic! My only criticism would be the bases, which look a little dull and uninspired compared with your frankly flawless miniatures. I'd recommend watching some of the basing tutorials on BuyPainted's YouTube profile, they're by far the best basing tutorials I've come across, and even though they're created with an airbrush you can easily adapt them to your own needs. Once again, fantastic Grimhammers!

Thanks for the kind words! Yeah i know what you mean about the bases..... Maybe ill try some new styles out on other forces when i get round to it. Ive just never been a fan of using modelling sand on small minatures like dwarves/goblins as it makes the scale look off in my eyes. However that wont stop me doing some research and possibly looking for a finer grain of sand.

In the meantime im just using GW stirland mud texture paint, dry brushed with karak stone and flocked with GW static grass. The rims of the bases are GW XV-88. Although i must say they look a lot better in person than in that picture

Nice painting. You could always use them as counts as khazard guard or iron guard etc if they have better stat lines. (I'm not familiar with dwarf stats so I assume they are better)

No problem, compliments due where they're deserved!

On the whole, I avoid grass and foliage with Dwarves, I find it makes them seem a little less unique, and in general their habitations are less grassy and more barren rock. Of course, they're your miniatures so it's down to you ultimately. If you want to add grass, add grass, no one can stop you. But here's a couple of tutorials I personally swear by when basing my own Dwarves, they're perfect for recreating landscapes comparable to Moria, Erebor and the Iron Hills. For example, I used the second one for Thorin's Company and the Goblins, swapping the 40K elements for pieces of wood and boardwalk from Goblin Town =

A simple grey rock base = https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=repX5lK ... PVQcfqBaid

A more slightly different style, ignore the 40K sci-fi elements = https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=yHgg73L ... PVQcfqBaid

Hope I've helped.

I actually quite like the "low fi" bases shown in the first picture. They draw attention to the miniatures themselves. I'm also not a fan of static grass.

My only criticism is that you need to fill the gaps between the "slotta" and the "slot". I assume you've not worried about this because you plan on static grassing over them, which is fair enough.

Anyway, Dwalin looks fantastic! I think he could use a little definition of the shadows in his face. It looks a bit flat. Keep it subtle, but if the freehand on his head is anything to go by you're more than capable.

Post subject:  Re: WIP Grim Hammers

Thanks again for the comments and advice! Going to try out some of those basing techniques on some spare bases and see which ones stand out!

And yeah when i was painting the dwarves i struggled with the layering over the faces. I tried it but found it quite hard, especially with the dwarves having such little areas of face to paint because of their beards. However i tried a new method on an old miniature and it turned out pretty well and was quite simple to do. (I should stop being so fussy and come to the terms that ive only been back painting for 6 months on and off after 7 years out the hobby haha)

Anyway ive finished 8 grim hammers now, so going to quickly take a picture with them alongside another one of thorins company and post it up in a minute.

Thanks again guys!

Sticky Fingers: I was thinking like a cobbled/paved street base for the release of the BOFO minature range
