I needed to make lots of trees.
But because I wanted to transport it all quiet often I decided to make trunks only.

Because the in the way rolls was all I was thinking of.

you can make clay trunks too a uniform height... and no foliage or branches means you can move your figures around.

use a brown felt cloth under then to demarcate the Forrest area.

I used a wire armature with air drying clay applied and sometimes used some foil to make some small branches.

I streaked a bark pattern with a stiff hobby cleaning brush and painted grey/brown to suit and drybrushed.

Work fine.. just not a diorama quality tree...

If your stuck for time you could consider this method.

I’m looking to recreate Amon Hen and I've pretty much settled on using Woodland Scenics thanks to all the positive reviews about the quality.

I’m going to buy two different types and I’d certainly appreciate suggestions:

Mixed Green
Evergreen Blend
Conifer Colors
Blue Spruce

Plus, I wouldn't say no to more pics of WS trees alongside LOTR figures :-D

I saw a great method once at a model railway show. The guy had made tall trunks, but the forest canopy was all once piece, made of chicken wire with flock and clump foliage stuck on. Looked great.
