Post subject:  Missing Mordor Siege Tower (Mark 1) template

A few guys have been in contact with me about the Games Workshop template for the Mordor Siege Tower that I used as the basis for my rendition: http://www.one-ring.co.uk/phpBB2/kb.php ... icle&k=301. The template has been removed from Games Workshop's website and I cannot find any online archived version.

Which presents us with a bit of a dilemma, as the templates are copyright Games Workshop 2004, so while we could show people where they were with a link crediting Games Workshop, we could not run the risk of accusations of breach of copyright and have copies of them here on O-R itself.

I have been thinking about a way out of this little mess and I suppose one solution would be to get weaving on the Mark 2 version (which nearly cost me a fingertip in the earliest stage of construction.) The design would be my own, closer to what appeared in the Return of the King and when I get it finished and the article is aproved, hey presto!

So, please be patient folks - I have a rather hectic life and hobby time is a pitifully scarce commodity. I am going to dig out the plans for the Mark 2 and the components I had made before the accident (there is some of my blood on one of them), and very, very carefully, start construction from where I left off (in 2006, I think... oh, I am a disgrace....)

Apologies to all for the problem and tardiness of a suitable solution.

Any article is good in my mind and a siege tower v. 1.2 would be great. 8)

A little progress update for those who are planning sieges: I have started assembling the frame of the new tower (ah, the smell of glue in the morning...) This tower is more complicated than the first one, and I am taking more photos of WIP, plus my templates are drawn on graph paper, by hand, so it should be straightforward to compile an article once the beast is complete.

Warning: as mentioned above, this one is more complicated, and I am solving some design issues as I meet them, so there will be no WIP pics until the tower is finished and the article is done - no point in showing something that had to be half disassembled and leading you guys up a dead-end.

I am also slightly superstitious of this one, folks. This almost cost me a fingertip. The offending piece has been glued into the frame (laying that ghost to rest, I hope!)

Well, come to think of it, maybe one or 2 WIP's might be permissable - perhaps when the wooden bits are done, again when the 'armour' is done, and then the painted piece.

Back to sawing and cutting again... yo-heave-ho, etcetera... 8)

Looking forward to it, Dorth. Your first tower was wonderful, and I'm sure this one will be even better. Just be careful with it.

I said I was not going to do any WIP pics... but the temptation has been there all along, so here is something to whet a few appetites (and probably scare some people silly, err, sillier...) I told you it's going to be complicated. This is the basic frame with some flooring, the ramp (which works!) and panels to support the cladding and armour. There are other pieces of frame to be added. I am not bothering with ladders as they look great but are a pain in the neck when it come to loading the tower with minis.

The Morannon orcs are there for scale.

There is another image but I have having trouble with that one... :-X

Alright, here goes:

Its looking sweet Chris!

You can see that a lot of time went to the design process of this one. Hopefully you'll still have 5 fingers in each hand when its done.

Keep it up! ;)

Thanks for the encouragement folks; the biggest motivational factor here is that I started this piece 3 years ago and I am not going to stop until it is finished.
So, continuing my theme of showing you lot absolutely nothing of progress, here's where we are at today: floors installed, inner roof and more supports installed, outer wooden cladding on base installed. I am distressing some of the wood as I go along - the main frame will get some of this treatment later. This model is a series of compromises and discoveries - you make decisions on what looks right and works but have to accept that it means this cannot be 100% faithful to the original - well it would have to be about 350mm high for that... :(

Here's the wood work:

And now, the tedious task of getting the base templates for the armour - this tends to involve scissors and a lot of swearing... because it never looks right from all angles! This gives a vague idea of where we are going...

The horror continues... :-X

Lol the horror continues

You make this sound almost painful and yet it looks splendid so far. It will all be worth it in the end Chris just don't forget to add that sambuca somewhere

edit: LMAO 'I am an idiot' translates to B.AZOOKA, ingenious!

I really love this structure, however... I think those base-templates for the armour look a bit weird.. not totally right or something... dunno.. maybe it's the angle... but.. hehe, nevermind :dizzy:

Nah, looking great Chris! :D

@ TheBucklandBrewer: those are paper templates sitting loose on the tower - they are not the final versions, just mapping out the folds and contortions required to get the correct shape and fit. They do stick out a bit much at the sides but that is because I had not finalised the shape when this pic was taken. I have made one piece in card and glued it on - workin on the others later.

And in case anyone thinks these are not along the right lines, I refer you to this image from RotK:
