Just finished my first piece of terrain and had to share.
I've had the original ruins sat around since the first box set and finally got round to doing something with them.

Add 1 pizza base, some pva, newspaper, all purpose filler, brown paint and a woodland scenics landscaping kit and I got the following result.

Adding a Mexican stand-off between Saruman and a Wraith for scale:

I'm really pleased with the results, the woodland scenics scatter made all the difference and I'd recommend it. What do you think?

Great Start. Terrain makes a huge difference in your game play experience. Always remember to make game terrain "usuable" when building it. It can be easy to add bits, foliage, etc... that decreases the area where you can actually place a model (i.e. Diorama vs. terrain). I've done this a few times myself.
Again, great terrain and good use of the GW walls.

Very nice for a first piece of terrain. It's a good point if you are making it for gaming role to measure useful space between structures using figure bases. As mentioned above for a diorama you can really go to town.

Very nice looking terrain, and Saruman looks god as well as far as I can see. Keep up the good work. ;)

Thanks for the positive comments guys :D . Hopefully I've got the spacings right on it to make it usable, I used some minis to gauge it before sticking everything in place.

I've now returned to my modular board that got as far as a couple of bits of wood just after Christmas. I've been following the ideas found in this blog, it's really good. http://realmsofminiatures.blogspot.co.uk/2012/01/modular-gaming-table-part-4.html Mine's on a smaller scale though, only aiming for 6 2'x2' sections.

These are pics of my progress as of this morning:

Since then I've filled in the other section and added the hills to the corners. I'll have to decide whether to use a grass mat to cover it or go for paint and ground scatter. Any thoughts?

Very nice :) I say go for paint and ground scatter, the result will look a lot better than a grass mat. Funnily enough I have just been working on a small terrain piece using the original scenery kit, great minds think alike lol

This looks really great already! I'm thinking of doing something similar in the future.

To my experience, I say go for paint and ground scatter, as well as MoriaMadness said. It is a lot more exciting creating from the start a gameboard than having to deal with a simple grass mat. You don't have to add specifically anything different, like a river or a mountain, just it will please your eye more a view of some dirt rather than grass across the table.

P.S. I may steal your idea with the moria ruins. ;)

What is the white stuff you use to fill into the wood?

This is looking quite professional and durable so far. I would definitely go for a scatter approach. A grass mat never gives the same realism (only really worth it if you don't have room for a proper board). Are you planning on having any built-in features to the board besides the hill in the centre? A small river for instance?

The one thing about using a grass mat for gaming purposes is that it will allow your miniatures to stand flush on the board.

But I would use a combination of both, but it needs to be thought out well first. I would take a piece of paper the size of your boards and draw it out first and use as a plan.

Awesome work, terrain is something close to my heart so it's always interesting to see other peoples work. Your boards look very durable which will come in handy when storing them, as mine always managed to get bashed to nicked.
