Although I prefer gaming boards, my nomadic lifestyle means that I will not be able to transport them to new countries very easily. However, I have been lucky enough to have GW's old grass mats. These mats have allowed me to easily transport games around different places. I want to have or make something where I can have gravel and sand (to play games in Mordor or Harad). Are there any companies that specialise in this? I know there are a few that have pictures of terrain but I don't like 2D surfaces.

The old Zuzzy Mats were fantastic, but they fell very far behind in production (It's a two-man operation) and are no longer taking orders. I'm interested if there is anything similar on the market.

Actually, I have a very interesting solution to your problem that might just work: truck bed liner. Yup. It's a spray on rubberized textured product that has some flexibility and lots of durability. The tv show "Mythbusters made a dog-bite suit out of it, and it was kind of flexible enough to be worn. Try talking to a body shop and ask them if it would work for your needs and if they would spray a mat for you.

Something like the grass mats made by Javis or any of the model railway firms ?

Otherwise you have lots of offerings in cloth or mousemat type material.

There is also a lot of threads on TMP regarding making your own textured mats if you are so inclined !

Sorry sticky I speed read your post, and you were asking for textured only. I believe Javis make some textured mats now, but I really would recommend having a look at TMP (The Miniatures Page) for some in-depth discussions there.

I have some of the Cigar box matts. I like them for somethings. The cobblestone and the desert are the most useful to me. I have the OOP GW matts and Zuzzy Mats as well

One of my friends makes his own from artist canvas.Obviously you can paint it and texture it like canvas, Static grass and flocking can be added so long as you use fabric glue like Aleene's Flexible Stretchable by Plaid.
Truck bed lining would be overkill.
