Do most people play WOTR or SBG? I plan on playing WOTR the larger the battle the better

The SBG following doesn't even compare to the WOTR following at this point....to some degree due to the fact that GW has basically let it die, in favor of pushing the more money-making WOTR. |

I like sbg. Wotr seems strange to me, the bases make it seem like warhammer fantasy. |

I have never tried Wotr but i agree that those bases are strange.. so i dont actually play anything, but have a sgb rulebook, and really wanna try a game |

WotR all the way. Because you can play with fairly small battles but yet also you can play HUGE battles.

I play and enjoy both. Very different in style of each and I agree that if you're really into one then the other may not be your cup of tea. But I've played a wide variety of war games over the decades and so I'm pretty flexible as long as its fun and captures the flavor of what I'm after. I think you should try the SBG if you get a chance. It really is a great system for skirmish battles and when every model counts individually you really have a different game. |

WotR for me. But I really want to try out SBG again since it has been revamped since the earliest incarnation I tried. It was not a pretty game straight out of the fellowship of the ring box. |

I play both, and I don't have a preference over either one. SBG is great for small games and is (in my opinion) more tactical. WotR works well with large battles, something that SBG never managed. |

SBG only, for me. I generally dislike "formation" style games. Too abstract, I might as well play chess. For me there is something compelling about the 1-on-1 nature of SBG, I think you can tell better stories with it. Also I love that you can move the models through all kinds of tangled terrain. That and I find the WotR epic stuff too cheesy by half. The Tolkien flavour is totally gone. I don't know why people think SBG is dead. It's not an iPhone, you don't *have* to upgrade or have the latest stuff to enjoy it. |

I can't answer what most people do because I am the only one in by group that plays either. WOTR appeals because I already have large army's. TWOTRSB is a outstanding system it works equally well with cowboys, pirates, and larger games like the Alamo. 
I am going to purchase a friends French and Indian war figures at Nashcon and begin a conversion for that. |

I exclusively play SBG. My roommate and I play HUGE games (2000 points each) even in SBG, so it is possible. You just have to be willing and able to leave the game on the board for a long time. I agree with Whafrog about the "Tolkien flavor" being taken out of WotR, and that is the primary reason I choose to play only SBG. |

SBG, WOTR is to buggy and is NOT Middle-earth inspired its just fantasy with a few Tolkien words thrown in, since when was Middle-earth inhabited by all these battle-winning spell casters! |

Good point. Less or more would make a very good discussion it self. Oh thanks for the tip on the laminated wood. I did not think to use it because some of them are so costly. The railroad hobby shop had some super thin plywood. And I found a iron on strip at the hardware store. I really would like to here some more reasons. |

SBG completely for me. I've tried WotR 3 times now and am unimpressed with it to say the least. |

More reasons? SBG is an extremely simple game where you win the game with skill, tactics and luck. With WOTR its all about finding the super-combo's and loop-holes and clashing head-on and rolling a bucket of dice. This could have been a great game and it does work really well if you use a 'light' version (no mega-magic and super heroes) as I do for playing ancient games rather than LOTR. |

Is this about who you play with rather than the way the game system works? I have been know to play ancients myself.I have just got off the phone (this means I ended A telephone conversation) with my brother in Ohio he is concerned with his Greek army and the new addition of WHAB I don't know if I am going to buy it yet. I think it would help me understand where you are coming from it you would mention which rules you use. Also, The Art of War? what do you think about that system? http://larsen-family.us/~1066/index.html I think this might be one of the most informative LOR sites on the web. Of course it is another system. sorry to ramble, it's that attention deficit gaming disorder again. |
