So as the title said; are glaives worth taking? Those extra 5 points per company add over a whole army, but I'm undecided as to whether the extra dice in combat is really worth it.
On one hand every dice counts right? We wouldn't give up our supporting attacks or shoot value bonus. But paying for the extra dice is a bit meh...

What do you all think and what are your experiences with taking glaives?

I'd say it's normally worth taking but if it's a situation of wood elves where they could take long-bows, I would much rather take the bows.

If the unit gets it as standard, that's great.

If there are no other options, it's great.

If it's between them and pikes, take pikes.

If it's between them and longbows (on Wood Elves), take the bows (the range means a few more casualties will be done and their shoot bonus gives extra dice anyhow, lol).

I think it depends upon what the alternatives are.

Consider it in another sense: if you have 9 companies of Wood Elves, you can either give them all glaives, all longbows or get an extra company of them.

In a word, no. :)

As a general rule I only use Glaives to fill in the necessary point on the battle field. This usually means that I have only one or two companies of Glaives, as the biggest point value goes to Knights and High Elves.

Agreed. I've played several games with my WEs and only the first used Glaives. I now just pack Bows. I would only use the Glaives if, as said above, you just want to fill in some points. But even then I'd rather look for an option to add another Company or upgrade. I'd never split up a Formation just to give some of them Glaives and I'd probably not give up other options just to get them.

Ok. Well it's for my new WElf army.
I have 2 formations of Bows and then 2 formations of non-Bows. It was just whether I spend 40 points on glaives for them or spend it on a Fortune...

Well here's the list I've written:

Quote:
Elves of Mirkwood - 2000

Glorfindel - 250

Thranduil's Host - 75

Thranduil - 125

Legolas - 200

Mirkwood Sentinels - 50
1 Company

Wood Elf Warband - 265
4 Companies, Captain, Banner bearer, glaives

Wood Elf Warband - 265
4 Companies, Captain, Banner bearer, glaives

Wood Elf Warband - 135
3 Companies, Longbows

Wood Elf Warband - 135
3 Companies, Longbows

Ent - 125

Ent - 125

Ent - 125

Ent - 125

I like everything about the list except perhaps Glorfindel. I'm just not a big fan of him in WotR (having taken him out a couple times myself far easier than I think I should have - H2K and even VH2K is fragile). I think a solid wizard, such as Gandalf or Radagast, or even Saruman the White would all serve you well in that force. The Ents provide a LOT of punch for you and you have enough of them to spread out the risk of loss.

I know you're trying to use up the points, but given the above suggestion (recovering some points from a wizard swap) as well as dropping all those Glaives you can get more models on the table or better Fortune options otherwise.

But if Glorfindel fits well with your play style and lives up to his point costs then I think you're going to have fun with that list. 8)

Thanks for the reply Beowulf.

I've never used Glorfindel before. But I've seen him rampage through an Isengard force before and it was amazing to behold!
Also, his small part in the Fellowship of the Ring made him one of my favourite characters (slightly annoyed he was replaced with Arwen in film...). So really any excuse to use him makes me happy. :)

But then looking at the points saved from swapping him out for Gandalf or Radagast and dropping the glaives... It offers up some opportunites for models on the board or a really good fortune.
To be honest I've never really used magic before; my normal army is Grey Company / Army of the Dead so not a magic user in sight. So I tend not to think of wizards when I choose different army lists.

I must go away and think about this!

I am looking forward to using all the Ents. I started off with just 2 in the army then came the realisation that I could fit in 4... :D

Aww, I went and bought the Radagast model and then altered my list. Then realised that Radagast is of course an ally and I'd already used up all my ally points with Ents... I'd have to drop two Ents to fit him in :(
