Hi, fellow Tolkien Fans!

My post today is on Cirdan. Chiefly, I would like to ask those with experience fielding him, of what success you have had.

I was interested to note that his special rule is rather like Khamul's (although of course his only activates on a six, rather than a five or a six, and the hits that Cirdan discounts aren't 'reflected' in the same way).
Not only that, but his magic (although limited to a mastery of one), contains blessing of the Valar, meaning that he also gets another shot at restoring his fallen fellows.

Is this a character I should be taking seriously? I picked up a model on eBay (more for the opportunity to field one of the firstborn and leader of the Teleri), and painted him today, but in terms of points he's leaning towards a bargain in gaming terms.

Also, please excuse the terrible image quality, I swear I didn't take the photo with a potato!

He is seriously useful but needs to be protected! His magic can be seriously powerful, but he is unarmed with a single attacked and needs to be in magic range of the action, but kept well out of harms way.

for those wondering who Cirdan is, in the wider context of Middle-earth, here is a nice piece of reference material from the Encyclopedia of Arda:

It has happened. And there were plenty of cultures who turned up for a fight in their, err, birthday suit, so to speak. :D

I still have a lot of work to do on the face (as well as all the other elves I have still to paint!) but yes, Harfoot, you may well face one of the oldest elves alive. I couldn't seem to get the colour mix right at all.

Interestingly, Cirdan is one of the only elves described by Tolkien as having had a beard.

Keep him out of any duels. He will get killed rather quick! Yes his magic is good as you can revive models with magic!

his special rule is rather pityfull.. maybe it's because I dont roll a lot of sixes haha

Well, it's still recovering models on a six for free, can't be all bad!
I see him as acting in a supporting role. Put him in an attacking company and let him do a spell a turn as well as replenishing a couple of losses. He's sort of like a better captain, since he also adds an ATD (if you didn't have a hero with the company already)

He's not gonna produce 1.5 coy of troops back, and that's what you pay for him. So, no, he's not worth it. Good cheap elf heroes are Haldir, the Twins and Thranduil. If you want added defensive power, you need to go the high-cost heroes, Galadriel (Lady) mainly. Gandalf is also a good idea if you have the points. Then combine Touched by Destiny with Epic Defense for dwarf-level defense Elves.

I had him in a battle of 1000p with elven vs moria. He was quite good because galadriel could give him back his might every turn. So he kept using epic defence and his magic was mostly blessing of the valar. I have to say that he's not that bad.. but you really need to field him with galadriel or elrond who can give him his might back.

But Galadriel can do the same trick on herself, so where do you need Cirdan?

He's good because he's cheap magic with a half decent special rule. Also he can do epic defence once which is handy.

Simply because I don't want galadriel to die! Would be a shame if you miss out on a free epic action each turn.

Cirdan is not that special but comes in handy with his epic defence and blessing of the valar.

Pay 75 points for avoiding a risk you can easily avoid otherwise (keep her company out of contact with duelists, put in Thranduil and beat them to it, etc.)? Not my idea of a good deal, but then I am more of the "YOLO" variety of gamer (sorry, I just had to use that word. Please don't hate me :p)

I know, I know. But it's just a nice word to say. Like swearing in French or saying "we were in a traffic jam for an hour" in german, it just works, regardless of meaning. And there is a lot to be said for the meaning too...

Aaaanyway. Back to Cirdan. Or shall we do another character, because all that has been said on our favourite toilet paper elf has been said, I think...
