Hello.

For the walls of this dwelling I want a wattle and daub effect - with some wear and tear revealing the wattle underneath the daub.

Wattle your thoughts?

What hot wattle! But though I do not want to get into hot water about hot wattle, I would assume that wattle would be more suited to outbuildings and more 'aboveground' structures. My guess is that for structural reasons, brick or plastered stonework would be stronger and less prone to water damage.

But that is beautifully modelled wattle. Well, no more waffle about wattle before someone gets rattled.

What will you do next? More wattle?

The lower beam raises the wattle and daub a good twelve inches above the ground, so it shouldn't get too damp with splashes of rain. If the Hobbits finish it off with a good coat of lime, I reckon it could last a few years. I can imagine Hobbits building using these materials.

The weathered daub will show the detrimental effects of the elements on this structure.

I've plans for other holes that will be half-timbered.

I think I rattled Natarn with prattle about wattle - there was a serious question but when someone feeds you a line like:

they really are asking to be 'thrown to the ground'...
Lime on the wattle - should work. More maintenance than stone or brick but maybe cheaper and not all hobbits had access to a percentage of a dragon-hoard (see - I worked Smaug into this thread!)

Really nice work. How you find the time, I really do not know!

The details on this are astounding Nathan - I love the keyhole especially (a feature I unfortunately forgot to add on my version) and the wattle and daub looks like it will be a treat to paint. This is the right up there with the best hobbit holes I've ever seen and leaves my efforts lagging sadly behind!

I seem to recall a thread somewhere on the One Ring that talked about the location of the keyholes in a round hobbit door being somewhere right in the middle. Am I just imagining things?

I am impressed with how quickly your sculpting skills have developed, and you have an excellent eye for details. I don't suppose your birthday is March 11th by any chance?

I think the knocker on Bilbo's door was right in the middle (or was it the handle?) - I'm not sure about a key hole. The centre of a door is a great place for a knocker but a useless place for a door handle because you'd have to use more force to open and close it. That's why I've put the door handle and keyhole on the left hand side while placing the knocker in the centre.

Thanks. I'm certainly itching to get the paints out!

There will be more updates very shortly. This is a relatively quick project (compared to dragons!). I have some other designs in mind too.
