I've made a few resin casts now. They've come out pretty well, although it's hard to see because they are translucent! I'd better paint one.

I actually think that the fine detail came out better using the specialist plaster - ultramix. Neither medium was fine enough to cast the door handle, but the plaster cast did capture the plate and keyhole.

I am always amazed by your work it is incredible. I have a question though reguarding the mold.

In your ruined tower WIP you showed us the cast that you made out of latex this time what did you use or is that a trade secret.

Just curious.

Nope! Too busy casting 1 and 2 at the moment.

Yes, it's another mould made from latex. I've got a few litres of the stuff to use up before I buy a different moulding compound. It's great for the detail and it has released well from both the plaster and the resin. The moulds stink after using the resin though - and I think resin gradually destroys the mould.

I've nearly finished painting hh1 now. So I should post a picture of that soon.

Has anyone had experience of painting resin? Will it need to be primed?

Do you use a mould release agent Nathan? If so, you'll need to wash the model thoroughly to get rid of it before painting. I have Forgeworld's Village Well model and it took me ages to clean that sucker off, and the paint refused to stick to it until it was perfectly clean!

Once cleaned off, I'd recommend an undercoat - it gives the thin coats of paint something to grip on to.

The models are looking brilliant Nathan, well done. Reminds me, I must get on and cast some of my own hobbit holes!

If the handle is a problem, maybe cast it as a separate piece?

It's a bit difficult to individually cast something which measures about 3mm, Dorth, so I won't try that one. For my next halfling holes I will sculpt the handle a bit bigger to allow a wider 'neck' which should allow the casting medium into the handle.

I think it could be easier to stick a tiny bead on - or model a new one.

A lot more painting still to be done on 'Bad End' but here's what I've done so far. This is a plaster cast.

If you'd like to buy one of the resin casts, you are welcome. :D

'Bad End' (hh1) £5
'Gardener's Lodge' (hh2) £5

Supplied unpainted (of course) and the copyright is mine, all mine!

Postage = £1.50 in UK
I will post overseas but must research prices. Europe will be similar to UK postage.

Just give me a pm.

Resin casts are more durable and will travel better. However, the plaster casts capture just a bit more detail. If you are in the UK and would prefer a plaster cast, I can do that.

These look great. I was lucky enough to get a set of the three that James Copp cast a few years back. (James Copp also cast "The Fireplace" which I was lucky enough to get one of the 7 demo kits)

I see that Dagorlad has also made some, man between the three of you I could make the shire!

Are those prices for real? how many can you get to me by the end of the week?

I really enjoyed reading over the progress you have made, its amazing to think that you have done all this and are sculpting hundreds of dragon scales at a similar rate. The most recent pics above are my favourites - you do your halfling holes superb justice

I would love to buy one but i dont collect hobbits.....I guess I'll have to start then

Yes, the prices are for real! No, I don't think I'll become a millionaire by selling halfling holes! Anyway, I want them to be affordable. I had the resin already and the latex, so I don't have to charge a huge amount to cover costs. This is just a hobby for me (I'm not gw mark 2!).

Tell me how many you need and I'll sort it, Jack!
Would one of each be ok? ;)

I've just butchered another KotD very severely, even taking off his head, in preparation for a big conversion job. However, I'm so pleased with the skull that I've sculpted that I may sculpt an entirely new figure for it to be attached to.

Cheers, Jack. Yes, that's a great big, deathly grin on his face.

This gives a better idea of how small it is. Perhaps it is slightly too large but people do have different sized heads. I've since made one that is slightly smaller.

Am I the only one thinking:

Alas, poor Yorick!

That is a fantastic sculpt, and yes, people do have heads of many shapes and sizes, so one skull a teeny bit bigger or smaller than average is perfectly plausible.
Are you thinking of doing 200,000 of these to make a diorama of The Paths of the Dead?

Um, misspelling?

'Bad End' (hh1) £5

Can I buy Good End instead? Home of the Goodinses? But those Baddins have a very nice house. One I'd have anyday, at that.

If you would like to call it Good End, then you are very welcome! and you are welcome to buy one.

I don't have copyright on 'Bag End'.

Here's another skull. Only another 6 to make for my project.

There you go, 6 skulls (or smiley faces)

Incredible work again, I'm amazed how much detail you can achieve with such small fiddly pieces of putty! What's this project you're planning?
