Please tell me you'll cast him...I'd definitely get one! :D

I think I will. It'll be a wish fulfilled for me to get something cast in metal.
I want to sculpt some more figures to go into the same mould, which will make it cheaper per unit. Having a mould made is quite expensive.
I'll let you know nearer the time, but it will be at least two months until I've got another couple of figures sculpted. Then again, with the summer holidays approaching :D it might be sooner than that!
I like your painting and I'd be really chuffed to have you paint a mini that I've made. That would be cool! :D

I like the banner bearer - A LOT!
Can I suggest interchangeable heads for these prospective 'Undead' as that would allow some scope for conversion/customisation.
And separate battered shields - again, allows for making more individual looking minis.

Thanks, Dorth! :D

I want to make a varied host of undead figures that could be used in a variety of contexts. So, if all goes to plan, I'll sculpt a wide range of models which will be easy enough to convert.

That's the plan.

I think metal casts can be converted and new moulds made. Maybe I could do that.

Yeah Nate, hurry up and get it finished. And cast! I'll buy some.

Then get started on an AotD Mumak!

That looks like high-quality work. Just be careful: The minis-police might decide to shut you down like they did those guys in Spain, and like they tried to do to Ebob.

Very cool! It looks a lot better than the GW army of the dead. I love the zombie like look.

Thanks. I hope I'm safe from mini-police. I wouldn't be able to sell them under any trade names used by NewLine or Games Workshop and wouldn't want to.

My host of living dead warriors will not be copies of GW's minis; they will simply be a host of generic living dead warriors for use in fantasy gaming. If someone would like to use them alongside their GW collection, then that's up to them.

While certainly in keeping with GW minis, in terms of realism and scale, the design of the figures will be unique. The armour is my own simple design, based on historical images and my imagination. The heads are skulls rather than the decomposing heads created by NL and GW, so that's another difference.

The minis I plan will also have differently styled weapons too, some of which will be totally different from GW's. Do they have a standard bearer in their army? Nope. Do they have archers? Nope. Warriors armed with spears and shields? Nope.

Edit 2011 - okay, so someone from GW may have read this before the release of the plastic aotd! Well, I don't see any archers...

The only main common features will be that they are 'dead', have some holes in their clothing and they look ace!

I presume I can call them a host of the living dead as I think that that is a generic term and, as far as I know, is not a trademark of any mini company. 'Undead' warriors in various styles and forms are quite common in the mini world and are already produced by several different companies. I have no intention of reproducing a product that is already available. My aim is to produce a unique host with a great deal of scope for interesting game play - in whatever theme the player chooses to use them.

Well, this all seems a bit ambitious and pie in the sky at the moment... I haven't finished my first sculpt yet! However, it's great to have something to aim for. I'd love to have made my own minis, then be able to paint them and use them in my games. For me, that would be the ultimate cool thing in this hobby. :D

I so looks forward to this happening for you...what a cool thing it must be to have someone want to buy your work! I only wish that I could tackle sculpting as well as you, ukfreddybear and Ebob have; I'm just good at hair and little bits of stuff here and there. I wish you all the best getting these wonderful sculpts cast and save me a set as my PayPal account will be itching to send you some money!

Nate, I think you are safe from reprisals. Like you say, these are just generic dead guys, who happen to be the same scale as LotR minis.

Just market them as Skeleton/Zombie Warriors depending on how flesh they all look.

Safe as houses.

Maybe put a few ref pics of the historical armour aside just in case though.

I've nothing to hide, Brian. I like being open.

TheOneRider raised the issue by suggesting that I might be breaching copyright by sculpting 'living dead' figures and therefore might be prevented from doing so by The Powers That Be.

In response, I just wanted to clarify that I will not be breaching any copyright laws because I will not be copying any designs or names from New Line, Tolkien or Games Workshop, which are subject to copyright. I hope that that is now perfectly clear!

The idea of living dead armies predates Tolkien by a few thousand years.

I plan to sculpt some figures that are 'undead'.
They will be skeletal warriors.
There is no copyright preventing this. :D

To be honest, the idea of me (novice sculptor hobbyist) taking on the might of established companies in the mini market is laughable  . I was just being polite to TheOneRider in offering a clarification.

That's true, I guess...
I just wanted to make sure that, since the sculpt I saw looked par excellance, Natarn Ulka would be sure to be safe from existing companies who might decide his competition is too close to their own.

That's one thing that's made my own sculpting designs slow in the inception.

I've fixed the sword to the arm. The next step will be to trim the blob of a hand and sculpt some fingers that grip the sword.

Another project underway is the painting and repainting of my dwarf army. Last night I repainted the fabric (on my Khazad Guard) using a mix of scorched brown and enchanted blue. Highlights still to be done. The Guard in the forefront still need painting.

I think I have 55 Khazad Guards. I bought all of them on eBay for at least 50% of GW's prices.

I love those models! They have great detail and look so solid and ready for a fight.

I'd originally painted some of them green and some red, but revised that after seeing the Erebor Army in Khazad Dum. The green and red made them look like they might nip off at any minute to help Santa with packing presents. This muted blue is far more serious and suitable for these dwarves.

Here's a close up. Bear in mind that they still need highlights on the cloth and a bit of tidying up.

Another project that I'm fiddling with is my fort. I bought one of John's amazing static grass applicators and have been playing around with it.

Skeletal standard bearer
I was pretty pleased with the sword. A bit of putty is needed to finish off the handguard (what's its technical name?) and give it a bit of depth.
