Sweet. Nothing like a bit of healthy competition to kickstart the motivation bug.

I could use a bit of motivation myself lately. I've done about one hours sculpting in about six weeks. My magic entry and terrain piece for the compy are still in the same WIP status they were two months ago, and it starts tomorrow!!

Ah well.

That detail is fabulous! Seriously, if you actually make it that good, I will be amazed!!!

I can't wait to see more of this.

Dylan.

Trying to work out how the front door looks and a way of constructing it, I did this cutaway drawing last night, and thought you might like to see it:

Image

Oddly enough @lorderkenbrand, I have drawn a rough floorplan of Bag End too, and it's pretty close to your link - thanks for that. John Howe did a design for the movie set, but it's far too small actually. According to The Hobbit, there were dozens of rooms of all kinds coming off the main corridor.

sweet concept art :D I wish I had enough drawing talent to pull of such sketches :D Now let's see how it will be brought to life.

I have eaten all the Scooby snacks.

As we have seen before, Dag is a dab hand sketch artist. Being able to envision something in 3D is a fabulous talent.

But don't build Bag End with bits cutaway...

You drew that?

It's lovely. I didn't know you could draw.
It's very much in the style of the lotr concept art that's added to the DVDs.

That concept drawing really is spectacular. You are quite talented indeed!

I'm going assume the answer to this is yes. However, have you seen the Atlas of Middle Earth book? The author (her name escapes me but I think its Karen Wynn Fonstead or something like that) has map of her take on Bag End. It could be helpful for you. If you don't have the book PM and I'll get you a copy of the picture in question. You can decide if you want to share it with your competition.

Thanks Brent, but the image in the Atlas of Middle-earth is the one that LordErkenbrand linked to.

I'll post the floor plan I've drawn once Brian has made a start on his version and it's too late for him to steal my ideas ;)

Okay, cool. I couldn't find Erkie's link so I wasn't sure what he pointed at :)

Ah Dagorlad! Nice stuff at the moment mate!
This is a little OT, but I also see you've got some stuff from hasslefressian!! His stuff looks so nice, how do they scale up to GW mini's?

Keep up the fabulous work!

yeah, a little OT, but I don't mind. The minis from Hasslefree are true 28mm scale and are quite tall even so, especially the not-Shaggy and not-Fred figures. The quality of the sculpting and casting is exceptional (Kev White was a GW sculptor for a while after all), although the mini supplied as the not-Scooby wasn't sculpted by Kev and the lower quality really shows.

I am going to have some fun with these meddling kids in a diorama I think, some zombies or ghostly Civil War figures would go well with them perhaps.

And back on topic again ...

That's a brilliant sketch! Very similar to some of the concepts seen on the Extended Edition DVD. It's a smart idea taking sections of the hole apart in order to understand how it would go together. Should make constructing it far easier. If you (and Brian, where ever he has got to  ) take a look at some of the stills on this site, you may find some nice details.

Looking forward to seeing more

Brian is on holidays on a tropical island somewhere and won't be back for another week or so.

This gives me a chance to get an early headstart! :D

While sorting out some cupboard space in the shed, I thought I'd try and organise my terrain supplies in preparation for making Bag End. I surprised myself at how much I have accumulated over the past few years.

Image
This is about 2/3 of it actually, there is more off-camera to either side, plus some still in the cupboard.

Brian doesn't stand a chance.

You paid for silver birch leaves?? You need a quick stroll in the botanic gardens..you can get a coffee jar full off the tree for nothing.

Heheh, right on the money El-Rabbito. I paid for them before I knew what was actually in the pack (I have 5 silver birch trees in my garden). They're actually the seed pods, but no big deal. however, the coloured ones look brilliant as ivy.

Well, just back from vacation and thought I had better make some sort of start. Nothing to show as yet, just cleared my work area to give me space to work and I am just starting to practice cutting some holes into various materials. Most likely will go for Balsa Wood for the facades.
Hopefully I will have something to show you all soon (not just some scrappy drawings).
