Started working on the tree that sits above Bag End. I don't think the actual species was ever mentioned, so I am going for a gnarly oak tree. When complete it should stand about 10-12 inches tall, which is quite large for a gaming piece.

After my first putty-session:

This is going to be a challenge for me, because oaks take several hundred years to get all twisted and mutant-like, and the oldest one in South Australia is a mere sapling at 150 years. So my reference material is purely internet-based. Ho hum.

A few putty-sessions later:

It's fun to do the sculpting on this, and it'll be good practice for making Ents later on.

Looks like you're a natural, Alan! You'll be sculpting mini's before you know it.

Great to see you 'twisting more trees', loved that article. The work on the putty looks fantastic, lots of small details and chunky bits of deformed shapes, which is what oaks are known for (apart from the acorns). Come on Brian, your country needs you! :)

Dave, funny you should say that.

I was looking at this tree and thinking "I really should sculpt an Ent" I love the Birch Tree Giant of yours (despite not having finished painting it yet  ) and really want a few more of a similar quality but of different tree-types (I was unimpressed by GW's efforts, when your version is so much better!)

Veering slightly off topic here, but I know what you mean about more Ent variety. I still have plans for eight in all, but lazy so and so that I am, it is dragging out longer than I intended. My Linden is nearly ready. I'm experimenting with the casting of shoots and leaves this week. All being well, it should be available at the start of November. I should really update the sneak peek photo's on my site.

Back on topic, looking forward to seeing the tree finished. Looks like it will be a strong cornerstone for the rest of the project.

I guess Brian has some catching up to do?

Got a bit further with the tree. the photo is a little blurred because it's hard to get the whole thing in focus. I'll try and take another shot of it from further away, to get the whole thing in the depth of field (I have a new camera and I'm still learning how to use it)

The hobbit is there to show the scale of the tree.

Why does it have a 'belly button' and one 'inverted nipple' ?

I have some wonderful oak leaf foliage from a company called Silflor. It's expensive, but the end result is stunning.

For your information, it has two inverted nipples, the other one is on its back!
