trying to classify this as you can build formation with both swords and spears as spears dont count as they do in sgb. im just wondering is it ok to mix companies with 50 percent sword and shields and 50 percent just spear and pay for the points to upgrade shelds?

so 1 formation will have 4 orcs with shields and 4 spears?

Unless your opponent is a stickler for WYSIWYG I can't see a problem as long you pay the shield price for the entire formation.

You can, its even stated in the rules that this is allowed.
