I always kept wondering, what happened to the elves at Helmsdeep.
It is clearly that at least some of the elves escape the uruks.
They run away with Aragorn from the deeping wall in some higher area.
And.. well if Aragorn survived, why not the elves?

Also in the part where the uruk use the ram on the door, in the keep.
How comes there are so few warriors, while you can clearly see dozens of warriors running inside.

simple. the reason you don't see any elves afterwards is because they're all blending into their surroundings using their elven cloaks. :-D

anyway, the book 'weapons and warfare' claims that all 200 elves die, despite them hitting on a 3+ and their elven blades granting them a +1 to wound. most likely is that this is true, since the relatively recent release of the galadhrim plastic boxed sets meant that putting together a larger army would have been financially impractical from haldirs point of view. poor elves.

as for the men of rohan... :?
i assume they retreated to the caves or the extras were on their lunch break. i wondered the same thing. in the books i think that gimli, eowyn and some rohirrim soldiers hold back to defend the cave entrance.

I suppose that's part of the problem with adding a whole load of folk who weren't really meant to be there - how do you get rid of them without changing more of the story? So they just have to disappear.
Maybe they just flew away?

I am pretty sure that all of the elves died in the movie. I am not sure about the men of Rohan though.

In the book there's like over 3,000 men of Rohan....
The "Weapons and Warfare" book is great!

Kind of a late reply but id thought id add my "serious" 2 cents.

When Theoden orders everyone to pull back to the keep. Aragorn and legolas are seen running up a massive flight of stairs on the side of the mountain/fortress, this is where Aragorn kicks an urukai and he falls onto another urukai and so on. Theres a shot that lasts about 3 seconds just after that where it shows a bunch of figures at the top of the stairs shooting arrows into the tide of orcs. If you have a good T.V and in the right lighting you can tell these figures have blue cloaks, the cloaks of the elves at helms deep.

So, in conclusion, my guess is that the elves held that stair position for aslong as possible to prevent the urukai from flanking the keep.

In the shot where legolas is pulling aragorn and gimli up the outer wall with the rope you can see 1 or 2 elven blades in the backround where everyone is fighting, so any surviving elves probaly would have just been killed on the outter wall or cut off when the urukai broke through the gate.

Lol...I feel like a massive nerd
