Ooh, I love those horses. Such subtle shading to highlight the muscle tones. I myself can't seem to find the patience to paint horses.

I have been trying a different approach which seems to work well for me. After the base coat I am starting witth a mid tone colour and working that up to highlight. Then I am using washes/glazes to create the shading.
I'm prefering this to starting at the base colour and working up. It also seems to be quicker, about 4-5 hours for a horse and rider.

Great work on the horses. The banner bearer's horse is especially good.

I started painting the Mumak today - gave it a prime then a base coat. At this point I realised the join between three of the tusks to the head was leaving some gaps so out popped the green stuff again and I have re-modelled these areas.
Hopefully I will get a bit more done tomorrow but one thing is for sure - it does use a lot of paint for one coat !!!

The skin is all but done on the Mumak within 2-3 hours - benefits of drybrushing his hide
I have around the eyes and the toes to finish then I will be moving on to the tusks.

My thoughts are on the tusks - do I do them
a) The GW design on Scorched Brown brought through to Skull White
or
b) Bleached Bone with a Skull White highlight and perhaps some light shading around the join area at the head.

The latter is my favoured as I'm using that for the toes and seems to be working nicely, despite sounding very simple.
Also, I've had a look at some elephant photo's and guess what - ivory is white, so I don't know how GW got their colour scheme.
Anyway I may be leading in one direction but as always I am interested in opinion and if there is something I am overlooking, like artistic license

Ivory has some yellow in it, Like Antique White.I think it is a warm color. I am not as good a painter as many people on this site and I don't use the same brand of paint. I would use Delta cream coat opaque Ivory as the base coat. Brown ink at the mouth and add some white to the ivory toward the end. I think you should try bleached bone If you don't like Delta.

I'd go with option B. As Oldman Willow noted you may want to add a little yellow, maybe start with a mix of desert yellow and bleached bone, though bleached bone may be yellow enough. I look forward to seeing it.

I will go with option b and I am currently getting a good base on the tuskes with Beached Bone. The problem is that I need a smooth a surface as possible to resemble the ivory texture.
That means very thin coats and a lot of them to create that look. I've done three coats so far ane I think I'm half way there.
I'm maybe being over cautious, but if I go too thick and get unsightly 'blobs' it could ruin the effect.
I will try to get a photo on in the next couple of days to shoe how it's coming on.

This is how the tusks are looking at present. I have tried to get a 'white ivory' look with some light 'yellowish' shading.

These are obviously an integral part of the figure, so I am desperate to know if you think they fit the bill, pleeease ?

The skin and the nails look really good! Excited to see the final result.

I'm not a fan of the tusks. I thought they were still 'undercoated' before I read your post under it. Don't know if the tusks on the photo differ that much from real life, but I'm not keen on them, too light. Sure it gives a more 'realistic' look, but still, in my opinion in painting world these don't look finished in my eyes
I'm more a fan of the tusks if they were painted in the same scheme as the nails I think. I'd like to see them more like bones, but that my opinion.

If you really want to keep this look perhaps a liiiiiil' more darker ivory colors would make the tusks look better.
Really do like the 'crack' looks all over the tusks though, good job on that

I agree on the skin and nails... great job.

The tusks, however, need to be a little darker/dirtier in my opinion. I suggest a more yellow/brownish area where the tusks come out of the skin, and then simply intensifying the contrast of your shading. Not too much, mind you... just to get a more grimy, authentic look

I spoke with my sister-in-law today about them - she's an art teacher, anyway she also suggests more yellow.
I will follow all your replies and go for more contrast, more yellow and perhaps along the lines of the toes.
However I don't think a copy of the toes will work - though I may be wrong.
Donuthare - thank you for the reply, but the GW tusk design is what I do not want to copy. I agree there will be other similarities, but just not the tusks.

The toes are awesome. The tusks seem pretty good too.

My only problem is with the skin.

When you look at elephants, you will notice that they have a quite brown. Infact they are brown. More brown than grey. They have warmth to their colour.

Your one is just plain grey, like you would find on the stones of a wall.





Don't want to sound too critical or anything.

I agree that the tusks need more yellow and at least a touch of brown at the very points where they meet the hide. Also as samoht said the hide appears too cold, I would maybe give some drybrushes of water down kommando khaki and a wash of scorched brown.

I will have another look at the skin though the photo does not catch it's true look.
I started with a base of 50/50 Codex Grey and Scorched Brown. The highlights went through the greys to Skull White but I then added shade using Ogryn Flesh to retain that brown base.
It was one of the things I noticed that elephants have a degree of brown to them - I don't want it to be brown though.
