That's a matter of opinion

Well may be, name me a plastic figure with better detail than metal figure.
With plastic moulding you can not produce fine detail. Fact.

OK, here is a side by side comparison of several 40K eldar figs I did not too long ago. (unless you are Hendarion from Warseer, in which case we don't need to get into this again  )

http://www.warseer.com/forums/showpost. ... stcount=24

I will concede that plastic cannot do undercuts without special tooling and molds, but the crispness and fine level of detail of modern plastics is way better than metal can do.

Now, GW has chosen to not bother including that level of detail in the LotR plastics, but that has nothing to do with the ability of the medium to hold detail. I am happy that they did because that has kept the price of them down significantly lower than the plastic warhammer figs and they still look good.

Now, as to the actual topic at hand. Many, many people who seem to know what they are talking about have said that most kinds of resin can hold detail much better than either of the other mediums, so, while the resin versions of existing figs won't show any additional detail, since the masters were sculpted with the limitations of metal in mind, new finecast figures made going forward should be able to be sculpted with much better details on them.

Ah, but plastic models are cheaper. Which for me is more important.

Yes cheaper is important, but I submit that GW's plastics will be anything but cheap.

Depending on the precise mix, the results will be pretty much the same - might even be better with some moulds.

Of course one of the weaknesses of the LOTR line is that there's a whole bunch of figures with utterly lazy sculpts. More detail will probably only show more laziness (I'm bitter, I've just painted up the command company for the Blackroot Vale archers with Duinhir, the standard bearer and Grey Company rangers as the rest of the command set - impressively "meh" figures).

What you will notice immediately is the weight, or lack thereof. They'll weigh about half, or less, as much as they do now. The texture will be subtly different, and you'll probably have to relearn some basic painting techniques.

Still not buying any, mind. :D

Well this is a LOTR Forum, not a 40k, so you can not compare 40k plastic to LOTR metal, which is (in my Opinion) still far superior to plastic.

I also paint Forge World, and resin has more detail than plastic or metal, but lacks the quality feel of metal, also resin is very brittle.

I think a common thread in these discussions is the fact that you can, if you go to certain efforts, make a highly detailed plastic mould. You can also, if you go to similar efforts, make plastic models perfectly in scale with one's metal.

GW manages that, or something close enough to make no odds, with 40K.

If somehow fails to do either of these things with LOTR.

Any idea why? Most likely answer: time and money. And time is money, so really, money.

Except you made a blanket statement about the ability of plastic in general to hold detail. I completely agree that the LotR metals are more detailed than the LotR plastics, but that isn't the fault of the material just GW's choices in sculpting.

Forge world resin is very brittle, but there are a lot of different kinds of resin and we don't know yet what kind of properties this new finecast material will have.

Hey Guys I was just searching info about the metal models and found this.

Here in New Zealand the store owner told me they stopped making metal because of shipping costs. Also in New Zealand the prices have gone up not down :( We are talking $45NZD ($35USD) per plastic model! (Blister) that is 3 hours of a normal persons income on one plastic model! Radagast on his sled costs $100NZD here ($77.50USD).

That seems very extreme considering the plastics are made in China these days. The prices of the Hobbit figures are very high here in the US as well and they are plastic or cheap fine cast. Fine cast is triple the price of the metal figures. :o  :-X

Yeah exactly I reckon if they lowered the prices more people would collect the models. I just buy all my models 2nd hand now because brand new instore prices are just scary! Someone who is new to the hobby walks into their store see's one plastic model for $45 pretty sure they would not even consider the hobby after seeing that!

Hi Madfrog,
You have resurrected a thread more than 2 years old and it has quickly become another criticism about GW's prices. We now have a dedicated thread to vent off about GW in general, so please limit negative views to the following thread in future:

Many thanks. :)
