Well done, he looks great and an especially BIG well done for having the guts to try the NMM on the sword, it looks pretty convincing!!! NMM swords are something I have been trying to master for a while now and yours beats any effort of mine!!! Well done again and keep it up, look forward to seeing more of your work! :yay:

I think the painting standard has slightly dropped this month, as I put more emphasis on the conversion work.

Great job. This should be an Orc captain. Maybe you should add some dark wash for the skirt.

Are you kidding ? He looks great!!! The only suggestion I could make is maybe a watered down wash of either Ogryn flesh or Devlin mud or both if you so wish over the severed heads. this will help to give them a little more definition. Another great piece from you. Good luck in the challenge

Your ideas and use of those ideas are excellent. Your painting is good and smooth, but flat with no depth. Being a smooth and accurate painter is a great thing. Adding more depth by either using washes or adding more highlights will make a world of difference. I can see that there are highlights on the heads, but the shading is not dark enough on them to really see the contrast effectively. My problem when developing this was holding the miniature too close, you have to hold it at arms length sometimes to really see how it looks as a whole.

Chris - yes, I sculpted a brooch thingy to hold his cape, and decided to paint the Eye of Sauron on it.

I do agree with the others that he could use a wash of Devlan Mud to make the details pop.

Yeah, I can tell that you have done some and yes you should emphasize them more. If you look at my WIP thread you can see that I am a "master of subtlety" like you when it comes to highlights and shades. There is nothing wrong with your model, but it will look pretty flat on the table. As stated a wash will add depth and make things pop. The thing that helped me was holding the model at arms length or putting it down on a table in another room to check out how it looks.

I'm painting Sauron for this month's painting challenge. Here's what I've done so far:

I'm unsure what I should do next, if anything (well, I've obviously got to do the base). Perhaps a better painter could give me some advice.

I would add a tiny (and I mean tiny) amount of bright orange intermittently around his ring...giving it an almost glowing hot effect where the Elven lettering would be showing through.

I've got mixed feelings about this one. I'm pretty pleased with my technique, but it still seems a bit bland.

In my opinion Sauron is probably your best mini yet. I think it shows really good improvment. I especially like the armour and the highlights you have done on this. I painted the same model for the challenge and found it a tough model to paint. It's the lack of variation that makes it tough I think. There are just 2 main parts - the armour and cloth - and these are mostly the same colour. I guess that is why you think the end result is bland - I thought the same with mine. It really tests our ability to work subtle highlights and variations onto the mini. I tried this with the cloth - trying to get a faded appearance near the ragged ends, but don't think it worked very well. The armour was really hard - drove me bonkers! Don't be too tough on yourself - I think you did a fantastic job on a hard mini.
