I'm about to buy some Rangers off of Amazon, along with some RotN, but I first wanted to know how good the Grey Company is. It looks like a lot of fun to play, what with no bow restriction, and I already have Strider. Any advice would be helpful.
Just looking at the points, one box (24) +2 blisters of RotN+ Strider (with bow, Armor) = 551 pts. Cheap (in terms of real money), but good sized army that can ally with most everybody, now I just need to know if they are any good on the battlefield..

Though I have no first hand experience, the Grey Companby is generally regarded as one of if not the most competitove SBG list in itself. They can beat pretty much anyone, simply by constantly shooting the opponant to death, by keep drawing back 3" and shootonf, by the time the enemy reaches you if he reaches you at all, there likely won't be enough left to beat you.

Awesome. Though I usually do just move in to fight hand to hand, they seem like a nice break from the Uruks and Goblins I usually use.

superb heroes from RotN to aragorn, halbarad and twins, even arathorn is fun to use.
The troops are good shooters and good fighters. Low defence but smeh! so are woodelves and we all know they can beast most armies

when I use gray company: I always ally in dwarfs or anything else with a High defence.
Grey company is very competitive in scenario's like meeting engagements, but for scenario's like domination or the high ground: their 'no bow limit' rule is wasted because your running around the field and can't shoot

Widely considered the most boring force to play against. Nothing wrong with a small contingent as allies, in fact they're good for that, but as a stand-alone army it is:
a) not viable for competitive play involving a range of scenarios forcing you to move
b) insanely boring to play against or with in scenarios which don't force you to move.

They are OK if you have a lot of heroes and therefore small numbers, if you max out on models and just shoot your opponant to death, he will not play you again.

Indeed. At my local club there is one guy who nobody likes to play against as he uses a maxed out archer list even in "friendly games". I've tried it once with a Last Alliance army and once with all-mounted Rohan, and in both cases by the time I finally made contact there was hardly anything left and I got mopped up in short order. I don't consider that a "fun time". Then again, to that guy winning is what's fun, not the act of actually playing... one born every minute I guess. ^^

Haha, the guys I'll be fighting will be Dwarves, Uruk's and High Elves. The lowest defense I'll face is 5, which even then I'll only have 1/6 of a chance of hitting. Then against the dwarves I'll need a 6/4+ to hit.

Add volley fire tactic to your Grey Company and no one will play with you for sure.

remember,
6/4s to wound means you need 12 Hits per wound... so on average 18 bows per wound.
BUT you still have 1 less dude to face when the lines hit. Especially when you can have 35+bows
