Hey all, I've decided to just put up an Isengard army and hope for the best. As I mentioned in my help thread in the WoTR forum, I'm unsure of the right size of companies and use of Heroes.

3 Companies of Uruk-hai Phalanx - 105pts

4 Companies of Uruk-hai Warband - 240pts
shields, Shaman

6 Companies of Isengard Orcs - 170pts
shields, Captain

3 Companies of Orc bowmen - 60pts

4 Companies of Warg Riders - 150pts
shields, Captain

4 Companies of Dunlending Huscarls - 100pts
shields

3 Companies of Ugluk's Raiders - 205pts

Saruman the White Hand - 240pts

Lurtz - 175pts

Thrydan Wolfsbane - 50pts

27 Companies, 17 Might. 1495 Points total.

Drop the Shaman and a Captain and get an Isengard Troll Captain.

And give the Orcs two-handed weapons instead of shields.

Then give the other Captain to the Dunland Huscurls, and put Thrydan with the cavalry.

Sadly, I have nowhere near enough Orcs with 2-handers to do that. Right now I think I can pull off about 20. I've been looking into Isengard Trolls, as I have a cunning plan to use 1 kit and some Reaper minis to make more than 1 Troll.

I'm having difficulty finding a suitable miniature for Thrydan. Using Wargames Factory Vikings as Dunlendings, but they don't produce a Chieftain model or any mounted ones. The GW model is too different from them imo. Suggestions?

For Orcs with two-hande weapons, use your spearmen too, I do, they do hold them in two hands. That and if you're not A GW purist ther WGF which can I think be entirely two-handed, but I don;t know that for sure.

Look for official Thrydan on Ebay, or there is somewhere that makes metal mounted Viking-looking people but I have absolutley no idea what it's called as I cannot remember, maybe someone else know which one I mean.

For the Orcs, just put the 2-Handers (and spears) in the command company and the front rows.

Then on to the list: Drop Uglúks Raiders, they are too expensive to use in such a low pts level in conjunction with 3 epics, 2 captains and a shaman.

Double the size of the Uruk Phalanx, or you're going to to have them vanish in a turn or 3 of shooting alone (never mind when they meet some Morannons or 2HW warriors of any kind). Best is apparently to convert them into Crossbows, which are Epic (3 coys of them with Saruman=reducing an enemy formation to nothing every turn  ). The Shaman most definately is not worth it, and you will most likely put Lurtz or Saruman in your warriors, so dump that captain and the Shaman to get a Troll chieftain.

The basic idea is to get Saruman, Thrydan, Uruk Warriors and Crossbowmen, and then fill out with whatever you like.

Why do you single Moranns as being specifically good against the Phalanx? All Strength 3 and Stength 4 troops hit Defence 5 the same, and there are plenty of Defence 7/8 troops the phalanx hits on the same result.

*Sigh* do I REALLY need a full formation of Phalanx? That's a big investment that I'd probably rather not make...

I don't like Phalanx period. Telchar is just saying don't expose them to archer fire. You can put them on the flanks for counter-charging purposes. If you must put them in the front then you could use the services of the Shadowlord or Khamul or you can Transfix their archers. Personally I'd convert them all to crossbows. WHF Dark-Elf Crossbows look pretty good in comparison.

Even better, don't take them at all. If you want them, take a full formation, so they are durable.

Gripping Beast crossbows are a cheaper idea.

Well, I just picked a characteristic unit they'd face a lot. I could just as well have said WOMT, or Blackshields or ...

You see, this is where I come into difficulty. Uruk pikes are great for SBG, so I'm not about to go and convert them all. That said, I have a few broken ones. Do you have a link for GB crossbows, Gothmog?

Twas Telchar that found the crossbows, not I. I would on;y know the Dark Elf ones as I will use them to convert my Corsairs into Arbalesters with them, but if GB ones are cheaper, I tooo would be interested in having a look, as I haven't yet bought the Dark Elf ones, so go on Telchar, post the link.

My apologies Gothmog, I really should've scrolled up to be certain!

I just got some Finecast Crossbowmen today and they do look lovely. I'm looking forward to adding a bunch more to my force, but I may scour around for some old metal ones first.

Due to popular demand:

2.50 pounds for 20.

Does anyone know what the twohanded axes on the 1st page look like?
