I like the sprue ruin, but it looks a little flimsy. How about a cardboard wall with 2 sprue brick walls either side, for extra strength?

NIce work, interesting colour choices.

The ruin itself is actually quite sturdy as I used plastic glue, so the ruin is 'melted' together. (though the wood platform has pulled away from the plastic sprue now, I guess I need to glue it with superglue rather than white glue)

If you mean that it looks too thin in comparison to the models I would probably have to agree. It is a bit thin, but hey, it's free, and doesn't look half bad. I think your idea might look a bit ugly from the top, unless you capped it off with something.....But then it's not really a ruin anymore. If you do try it out, throw up some pics, I am always interested in seeing others work.

@Bastion.Hun
Wow, you're right, he does look quite a bit like him. I'm not sure I've ever watched snow white (I know, I know...) so I didn't steal the scheme from him. But, take a look at my next bit of progress, a tan vest anyone? :lol: :o

(the first picture shows the highlights better, the second has the more realistic colours. I adjusted my lighting in between)

That is just some sand I picked up at a campground. I think it's quite a bit finer than most people use, in fact I've been thinking about adding a bit of bigger stuff to the mix so that I can get more texture! :)

Hmm, I'm looking for a finer grade myself! Suppose I'll just go get some from outside :)

It's extremely cheap! :-D All it costs is a few short bursts of effort to dig the dirt up. 8) :-D

Haha :-D I've always found it curious that I, and wargamers in general, am willing to actually pay for sand, gravel, and dirt, but I suppose the gravel we buy is typically of a much higher quality than the "random" dirt we would find outside, and is specifically manufactured to be used on wargaming bases.

I have never bought basing talus, or what have you....But that's just because I want to have the most fun and best looking guys for the least amount of money possible. I grabbed that sand probably ~4 years ago, and filled a couple of tupperware containers. I still have a lot left, even with using the sand for terrain. I finally decided about a year ago to 'splurge' and get real static grass to put on my guys bases, though I still use my home made stuff for terrain. It's dirt cheap (died sawdust), and the larger sized bits don't stand out as much as they do if they're on a figures base. Anyway, I was too busy to get any painting done yesterday, but I have this afternoon free so hopefully I can finish up this guy.

@Jamros; Wah Wing.

I use the Citadel Modelling Sand, because the grains are large and drybrush well. The few models that I've seen which used natural sand (all by GW staff, strangely) looked terrible, because the grains were so small that paint failed to pick them out well, or there was contamination from dirt, or the sand was too "glassy" and would just flake off. I have a tub of Modelling Sand which I bought for £3 around 5 years ago and have still got more than half left (I've made very little terrain though, which would take use up a lot more sand than basing miniatures).

Yeah, I have realised that that is the problem with my natural sand, it's too fine!
I didn't get a chance to finish the ranger yesterday, I played a siege game with my brother. I probably won't have time today either, I'm go geocaching and then going to see the 2nd sherlock holmes in the cheap seats. :-D

And he's done. Except for the rim of his base, which needs to be painted black. :)
I left his tabard (maybe not the right word?) dark green, but with the previous paint already on there it got a little thick. :-X
I also did a devlan mud wash on his bow, no more yellow! :D

In the end I am pleased with how he turned out. I'm not sure what I'll do next, though I found a CD in the garbage that I am trying to turn into a marsh scenery piece....We'll see if it works.

I painted the rim black, but didn't take a picture as I thought it wasn't that big of an update. :lol:
Here's where I am on the marsh piece. I also started another woodelf, sorry for the dark photo. I don't like his skin/face as much as my ranger, but I think part of the problem is the sculpt, the right (in the picture) eye seems to have been sculpted higher... :x

*Edit* I took a quick picture, the ground is now drybrushed, and there is some colour variation in the 'swamp' part.
