I bet if those goblins had a less bland paint job they would look miles better. There are no spot colors and so they look plain and flat.
GW has a bad habit of using this boring flesh tone for a lot of models. Their plaguebearers look awful but are actually really nice models if painted with a little colour.

Hmm, my excitement level just...modified...itself.

I don't really game to recreate scenes from the films. Me? I love little untold story scenarios: Dunedain Rangers facing an Orc raid in an Eriador winter; Riders of Rohan pursuing Orc horse thieves into the Wold.

The Great Goblin et al will, I am sure, make a lovely scene in the movie, but I am not sure I need models of him.

Also, I see some of the weirder sculpting styles associated with LOTR in recent years is back - look at those poses, look at the arms.

So...whatever, whenever.

Ok, let's bring up some Nostalgia... Shall we?

Anyone remember these?

New movie --> new rules.

So now, what do we see?

'The Hobbit, An Unexpected Journey'
Just the first film, right?

So... See where I'm going?

heh, I do.

I think you're right, I think we'll see a starter set each year for each movie.

I am intrigued by the hardback. Will it cover all three movies (as curently understood*) as well as the extant profiles?

* I think the decision to make a third movie messed up the merchandiser's plans. There's already action figures for characters we probably won't see until the second movie, or even the third. So GW probably have material for movie one and half of two approved for the core hardback.

I'm confused... so will the hobbit be a brand new game or not?

It will still be SBG Sid, I can't imagine the core of the game being changed much. The new Rulebook is more to do with the rebranding. The One Rulebook couldn't stay what with SBG being given a new title, so instead of being able to use TOR alongside a Journeybook like we did in the past they've combined the two into one.

I got every starter set at it's release and the game never changed, just some tweaks. The only big changes concerned armybuilding, the LOME book and more recent the warband rules.

Though The Hobbit is an opportunity to update the whole game I don't think it will happen, again just some minor tweaks.

As an aside:
Looking at the promo pictures, I suspect we'll get 32 Goblins, not 18 Goblins, 12 Orcs and 6 wolf rider dudes in the core set.

Sad.

Interesting reading everyone's reactions, gotta say after a day's mulling I'm still having mixed feelings.

Most importantly I love the Dwarves, they were the figures that they had to get right for me and they're spot on, full of character and detail.

I'm a fan of the goblins too, as others have said I think it's the paint scheme that really holds them back, I'll be doing them (and the Great Goblin) in a far darker scheme (thinking Steel Legion Drab for the base colour) to better reflect the ones from the trailer/promo material.

On that subject I'm also a little surprised by the reaction to them, they look like damn good sculpts of the designs we've seen with the trailer. If there's any issues with them then, as others have said, it has to lay with PJ et al. not with GW. The only thing we can really critique GW for is the pose/paint job. I'm personally glad they look so different; in PJs Middle Earth all the different 'orc' types (Moria, Mordor, Uruk-Hai and now Misty Mountains) look different to clearly differentiate them. If they were just Moria clones then it would hardly have been very exciting would it? I'm really excited to see new designs in the movie and like that GW have carried them over here. For those who really can't stand them, use the dwarf company and the scenery and cover it in Moria goblins led by Durburz - should work! :-)

I still can't quite get on board with the orcs though, again it could be the paint job but I just really don't like the poses, the hunters of foot remind me of some 40k models (Dark Eldar Wyches maybe?) and I've gotta be honest I don't think the Warg Riders are vastly better than the current ones.

Anyhoo, figures aside, any firm news on the rules yet? There are clearly WDs out there, what do the Battle Reports etc. imply, is it the game we know and love? How much has changed? Do we get scenarios/profiles in the new book etc. etc.?!?!?

Also, any word on UK pricing? I doubt a direct Euro-GDP conversion will be correct.

Bottom line there's tons of new stuff for SBG, this is a good thing.

I think I'm going to do mine exactly like this:
Image
Green/grey with purple glazing for spot colour.
Maybe I'll add some variation by doing half a different colour.

Yeah, I'm getting way ahead of myself but I can't wait to get my hands on that Great Goblin!

Oh! Nice!

Good lookin' minis... But what has GW done to those poor trolls?!
They look like plastic toys...

And the Goblin king looks like a Daemon of Nurgle

The only ones I REALLY like are the hunters, Bolg, Thorin and Kili. The warg riders and the first Gandalf don't look too bad either. Can't say I'm a huge fan of the rest, they're ok, but that is all. What on earth is with Saruman? Is he slowly evolving into a wizard giraffe?

If somebody would read it then I'd be happy to mate. I've done a few on The UnderEmpire forum but they are a bit hit and miss.
Cheers.

The corresponding Lego set has a "goblin scribe" that uses the short "child" legs. I assume that the little goblin we see is that scribe, maybe he's a shaman or something.

I'm sorry but I have to say the loss of the Perry Brothers really shows. I realize that these are bad pictures and I'm sure some will look better in person, but... Then it simply could be some of the paint jobs. They are uniformly bad. Is GW going down hill fast or is it my imagination?

I have to agree, there are several figures, that I don't like. Especially the goblins and Bilbo.

These pictures have been circulating since yesterday folks and are on other sites and threads. Some of the minis are pretty good from what we can see - well at least they correspond to what has been glimpsed in trailers and what I have seen in 2 of the Hobbit movie books that I have had in my grubby paws for a few days.
The paint jobs - well, the photos are smallish and these were more atmospheric rather than colour guides so the jury is out on that one for me BUT I am heartened by what I have seen. The pain comes in the pricing...
