Yup you've got the clothing highlighting sussed now Dom - the new version is a million times better than the original. Next thing you can maybe try is once you have painted the armour add a little chainmail into the armour base mix and a tiny bit of ater to the mix too and just highlight the edges of the plate, panel , lol whatever it is. Just an edge highlight will make these guys pop. Well done mate - great work!

Domy - the technical term for the High-elf armour is a laminar pattern, similar to the Roman lorica segmentata in concept though more developed and graceful.
The elves are coming on very well - great videos!
here is a starter reference for the armour - there are many more (depends on how much detail you want). John Howe knows a lot about armour which is why the LotR and Hobbit armour looks good AND works properly. If you watch the extras on the Fellowship dvd/blu-ray there are lots of interesting bits including how John Howe arrived in New Zealand equipped with every bit of armour and swords/medieval weaponry he could get into the cargo hold of the plane.
I would love to have been a fly on the wall for that conversation at customs...
Looking forward to The Hobbit videos!

Thanks for all the compliments!

DMS: Do you mean like an extreme highlight on the top of each laminae? (thank you Dorthonion - you know too much.) If so, my armor base is a Tin Bitz colour so wouldn't a highlight with that be a bit dull? I have probably just misunderstood you so could you explain a bit more?

Dorthonion: I've never seen the extras, it's too hard to put in the DVD and not watch the film! Thanks for that reference though; I'll try my best to watch it.

Yep no problem Dom.

So you base with Tin Bitz then paint on the armour with whatever colour your using as the main colour for the armour , shinig gold for instance. After this stage mix a little of the main colour (the gold) with a little chainmail and a tiny touch of water (just to make the paint a little more translucent) and highlight the very edge of each laminae (thanks Dorth) - by the edge i mean the places on the armour that would catch the light the most- I'll try and show you with a pic.....
Image

You can see the lighter areas on the breat plate at the top most areas of each laminae. the same principal work on the armour on the arms and legs. There is no wrong way of doing this highlight as long as you highlight the same area of each laminae as the light source that is making the armour shine could in effect be coming from any direction.

Hope this helps mate - any more clarification needed just ask.

Thanks for clarifying DMS. I will try it out and once I can take and upload some decent photos I'd be grateful for any constructive criticism.

The goblins are quite hideous (in the best possible sense) - nicely done. I always have a soft spot for High Elves. Gandalf and Frodo - great!

Hi Dom, those look great! I think the Drybrushing works better for your style of painting! It looks dirtier and more suitable to the gobbos!

Loving the banner bearer conversion!

Cheers!

Didn't know you were on here! I think the drybrushing probably does look more natural and it's way quicker. Probably stick with that.

Given their troglodyte existence and their propensity for eating food of dubious provenance, the Nurglesque putrifying appearance of the goblins is great. I see lots of scope for experimentation - make the lumps on some gobbos one disgusting palette and vary that among the rest. And they can be plastered in filth of all descriptions, so there is great scope for variation. I like these a lot.

I also think the drybushing looks more suitable for the goblins, but both look nice. I love the banner

Are you suffering from a bit of sesquipedalian loquaciousness Dorth?

Brilliant painting Dom! I love the Elves, High and Galadhrim.
