I have just returned to the hobby from a 3 year gap and I have found that much has changed! New rulebook, sourcebooks, warbands, the hobbit sbg? I have been more of a painter than a gamer in the past but really want to get into the gaming side of things! I want to begin collecting an army that works well on the table but also looks good. My favourite realms from the books and films are those of the dwarves (erebor, iron hills, etc).
Any advice or ideas would be really helpful as I am well and truly stuck! Thanks a lot!

Why not a dwarf army then? Endless themes new models and they are a great army.

And what about warriors? Should I bother with the current dwarf warriors or should I wait for the new models being released with the hobbit? I already own Gimli but I'm not sure if he's worth using.

I think the dwarves of erebor are set to be the same stat wise as current dwarf warriors but will have spear as a wargear option which will help much!

The current dwarf warriors work fine, if you have a couple banners and sprinkle in a few elites like Khazad Guard or Iron Guard. I'm sure the new dwarves will work great in addition to the current ones, and having spears means you don't need banners as much.

Gimli is worth using...

Okay! Thanks everyone, this is really helpful! I'll take a look at the GW website and start looking through Tolkien's appendices for background info. I'm going to need to find paint schemes and methods for the different Dwarven kingdoms. I guess they'll be in the painting forum? Also, many dwarf holds are there?
