Is there a thread somewhere on just WHAT they are thinking about their pricing strategy? You know, definitive facts/stats and answers. Cos it just seems to me like they are pricing away a potential boost in sales by up to 50% and with another increase this month its just making people say "okay, forget it - I'll go play Mantic Games or Flames of War etc". Just seems really, really, really stupid to carry on at their current rate and wind up NOT the biggest wargaming company.

Is there going to be a price increase this month? The only set that is substantially more expensive than it should (based on the rest of the Hobbit releases of course) is the Warriors of Dale.

I'm only basing my comments on the less miniatures for the same price thing, which to me is a price rise as you're not getting those 2 extra you should have. They've done a similar thing with the Chaos stuff. The Death from the Skies direct only supplement was something else that seems to have angered the hobby community in general, and independent retailers like myself. Oh dear GW... Oh dear...

Prices are ridiculous. here is a price comparison for GW Australia

Hobbit range
warriors of Erebor $55 for 12 models or $4.58 each
Warriors of dale $55 for 10 models or $5.50 each

LOTR Range
Uruk Scouts $37 for 12 models or $3.08 each
Uruk Warriors $37 for 10 models or $3.70 each

That is just over a 78% increase from Uruk scouts to men of dale.

That just can't be justified in any way.

I fully intended to pop back into the hobby. However, I walked into the local GW a few weeks ago and proceeded to gaze upon the knights of Rivendel. $60 for a pack of 6 plastic models... at that point, I lol'd and walked out of the store. With the new March releases, ~10 units at a $40 fee... well, this adventure didn't last that long. They still have the old box of Easterlings at $37, I'm tempted to pick that up and call GW quits. Dunno what I'm going to do with the armies I have, considering there are no local non-gw gaming clubs in my area.

You know, you don't have to buy any of the new stuff to keep playing the game. All your old armies are just as competitive as they used to be. While the new models are pretty good, they are in no way required to have a good army, in fact most if not all of the warriors released so far are evenly balanced with the old models. Some are even underpowered, so there's no stat creep that makes them absolute must haves. The heros on the other hand, are a little OP. I would say that the line of Thror is a must for dwarf players, but you can use the old dwarf models as troops, they have the same stats. Azog and Bolg are worth getting, but not necessary for orc players. Tl;dr, don't give up on SBG just because the new models are expensive.

I'll just limit myself to the LotR armies. Some of the new Hobbit releases look very nice though, but they're way too expensive.
As long as they keep selling the 'old' models, I won't complain.

Hmm.

Apologies beforehand if this is a rather stupid question.

Let’s say the LOTR line continues to sell (I continue to support it) at a reasonable rate and no one is buying anything from the Hobbit line. Will GW:

A) People are still buying LOTR stock but no one is buying Hobbit stock. Let’s lower the price of the Hobbit line to match the LOTR line!

B) People are buying LOTR/Hobbit stuff in general, no need to change prices

...

And just to stay on topic:

Pretty models (minus Lindir) but I will not buy anything from The Hobbit as prices are a little too ridiculous.

Or C) Up the prices on LotR to match the Hobbit prices because LotR is selling so well.

Compare this with, say, Gripping Beast's plastic box set of Viking Hirdmen.

44 figues (including command sprues) for £20, or 45p per figure.

Translated into American, that's $30.35 for the box and 68 cents a figure.

The cheapest (so, non Hobbit) GW figure is four and a half times the price. Even with the "old" models, GW are exploiting you.

Gripping Beast are a great range (mainly metal) for proxies. I favour a Dark Age aesthetic and these figures avoid the over-uniformity of GW units. I have often wondered if the Rus/Town militia would be good for Dale and that makes the GW take on them all the more interesting.

My, my. We'll make a cynic of you yet. Welcome to the Dark Side. 8)

I was going to make an identical comment but you beat me to it. :yay:

I'm working on a dual purpose Anglo Saxon force, which can also double as Rohirrim infantry or even Rhovanion Warriors (ancient Rohirrim ancestors). Gripping Beast, Wargames Factory and Musketeer Miniatures so far.

WETA/GW seem to have gone for a fantasy Mongol look, so it might be a good idea to use converted historical Mongol miniatures (give them pointy furry hats etc.) 8)

That's not me being cynical, it's me being a realist. I find it more likely for them to increase LotR prices than decrease Hobbit prices, and more likely still that there will be no change in prices.

Relax, I was just teasing you. I agree, GW would sooner raise prices for the old LOTR range, than actually decrease the Hobbit prices to a sane level.

Any rumors on the heros? I wouldn't mind stocking up on models that I've been waiting for now before they get any more expensive.

metal heroes will probably stay the same but any of the FC ones will increase by £1-£2 like they usually do.

HA! If the LoTR stuff goes up to $40Cdn for 12 minis, it really WILL be the deathknell for me. I have tons of stuff as is, so I scarcely need more. I wanted to get into WoTR a little, but beyond MAYBE Dwarves, I don't see it happening.

I got 60 goblins nos for $30 off ebay about four years ago. There's no way I'm paying $3.30 apiece for the same plastic moria goblins today.
