I'm wondering what people's experience and tips are for using washes & brushing main areas off with alcohol to remove excess wash.

I've recently come across this technique. Basically what you do is paint a base color, varnish it, then pop your wash over it, and finally remove the excess wash with alcohol from raised areas.

I for one usually paint the raised areas after washing, but this might work better, so I'm just wondering if any of you have tried this, have good/bad experience with it, and have suggestions as to what alcohol to use? (from what I understood, cheap vodka from around 40-50%)

Well well another chemistry lesson LOOOOOOOOOL.

I have never used or knew anything about this technic but from what I know is that ethanol or ethyl alcohol is used in chemistry as a solvent so it must somehow reacts with the acrylic colour by diluting it and therefore removing it.

In this case the purer the ethanol the better the results I don't know in UK but here
(Greece) you can find very cheap (blue coloured) alcholol in the supermarkets which is about 95% pure but a cheap vodka could also get the job done just with more effort I guess.
Only remember the higher the concentration the better the results.
But you must be careful when you use it because you might get different results(like ruining the paint job) and of course this goes without saying: avoid eye contact with ethanol

I just blot off the excess wash with a dry paper towel.

Another technique that helps a wash flow better is to wet the surface with water before applying the wash.

The only risk you run is that it's more commonly used to remove varnish and paint from models so you're likely to ruin your hard work if you don't know what you're doing

If the varnish is watered based then most likely to go with pure alcohol but if it's non water based then it will stay put

Thanks for all the tips, I plan on trying this out on a few Space Marines soon. I'm thinking of using cheap vodka, but might try pure alcohol as well.

Be careful though, if you use too much alcohol you may forget to wash.
