So in the wait of being able to paint again (had an arm surgery) I'll just upload to you the warrior of Rohan I did two days ago (first model in about a year or so). It's okay I guess, I have some weird addiction to drybrushing the entire model with white/bleached bone after I'm done... oh well, just noticed some mistakes and all, but ok.

Constructive criticism is more than welcome!

he looks like a maquisard but with a bow, oh and the drybrush bleached bone works really well on codex grey btw

Nice to see you've started your thread already. I've never seen anyone do the white drybrush afterwards and I admit I find it unusual.
You have a good level of painting to start from and I hope we can help you improve. By the way,that's not be disrespectful, it's what we all want.

Thank you. The white drybrush is pretty weird, I know. In my very early painting days someone told me drybrushing white on your basecoat helped, this evolved into drybrushing afterwards I guess. It looks fine, but it sometimes just messes up the detail when I brush a bit too much.

PS : Any recommendations on making a basing which blends in with most battlegrounds? I have a bunch of material available, so no restrictions (except for my lack of basing experience

Paint sand brown and scatter flock and maybe a few tufts of grass on top. Works for pretty much anything apart from in the snow, on a wooden platform or in Moria or underground where the ground is grey and rocky everywhere.

I decided to try and get rid of that, it's pretty addictive. The mini's just feel so incomplete without it for some reason. Any suggestions on a replacement of some kind?

Looking at your minis you need to work on highlight and shading. For example by painting a very dark green into the crevices of the cloak on your Rohan archer and a very light green on the raised areas. Have the paints thin, about one part paint at least one part water. Never use pure paint.

Exactly, my highlighting/shading is really lacking. I'm just a bit afraid of mixing paints or thinning them down, don't know why though.

I'll give it a try tomorrow.

Great start there, the drybrushing over the top is quite unusual and it looks quite good on the helm, quiver and cloak but not too sure about it on the bow and red part. The face is excellent it looks like you've got that downpat.

The only advice I could offer at this stage would be to highlight and shade more, perhaps if you're not too keen on watering the paints down for shading you could look into the games workshop shades? Pretty simple to use and gives a great effect.

You could go two ways with that either paint 2-3 layers/highlights quite light in coulour then shade at the end which might be a good way to start. Or 1 base, shade, layer that base over leaving the shade in the crevices then 2 more highlights. Hope this helps

Oh and a good piece of advice I got early on in my wip - make sure to clean up any mould lines. Still not something I enjoy doing at all but it has to be done haha.

The white highlighting looks good on some areas and bad on others. Maybe you should limit it to just the parts where the benefit from it. His helmet and face are very nice, did you forget to paint his left hand though or is he wearing a glove?
Yes I agree that he could benefit from more shading, highlighting.

I completely agree with you guys, the white looks good on some parts, yet it ruins others. He is wearing a glove, it's just that the gloves and boots failed miserably IMO.
I think the face is pretty good as well

apart from some green and brown in his beard... I'm not up to painting eyes yet either, but will certainly give it a try later.

My arm is properly working again, so it's back to the painting table! :-D

I'll probably upload some pictures soon.

. Perhaps a watered down wash will disguise most of the weathered highlights. Its good to experiment.

I present to you, with mixed feelings, another proud warrior of Rohan.

I tried highlighting on scorched brown with a mix of scorched brown and bleached blone, thinned down with water, but it just failed miserably, no smooth transition at all.
Thus I 'fixed' it by doing some other stuff. I did use my bleached bone drybrush again when it was done, but this time a bit more subtle, and not everywhere. I'm pretty happy about the mini.

The drybrushing works well on the hair. It looks decent enough metallic parts and brown but not massively keen on the cloak.

I used to do this too btw. I would try the more watered down layering approach on the cloak.

this is what i used - hopefully something will take your fancy

1. Black
2. dark angels green on 90% of the cloak, leaving deepest and darkest parts black.
3. dark angels green with a small bit of catachan green, bronzed flesh & white, repainting 80% of the cloak.
4. as step 3, but with enough white so that its lighter than the last layer, but not too sudden on the highlight if you get me.
5. a watery dark angels green layer (not a GW wash) will help merge the tones.
