I like him very much! I'm just not that keen to go mixing paints alot. But no problem, for now I like my most recent mini's, the white on the cloak is much less disruptive in real than on the photographs, luckily. :-D

I have a question though, what colour is best for highlighting on bestial brown?

Greetings,

So I made my first attempt at basing a mini... Personally I think the gravel needs a lighter colour, so next time I'm adding bleached bone. It was a bit of a mess, there was alot of gravel coming loose on the sides and there's some static grass paint-glued to the rim. :roll:

Also, the static grass is really bright, it looks almost fluorescent, or is that just me?

What do you guys think? Any advice?

PS : the rim was painted with bestial brown (as my TT Journeybook recommended)

It's not perfect, but a lot better than what my bases would look like I guess

Thanks. I'm thinking, maybe I should use finer gravel (or sand), so it really fills up the base to the edge and I won't have as many disturbances when painting.
Any experienced basers who would like to share their thoughts on this?

base looks pretty good - you may find for the stones that less is more mate.

When drybrushing the bases, do 10 gradual drybrush layers than 2 sharper ones. you'll be surprised how good the many drybrush layering approach looks!

Having some sand will help that. Play about with it and see what fits best for you.

I will certainly give sand a try, since I don't really like the outcome with this gravel.

nice work, I use to paint something like this too, use to love some bleached bone dry brushing to bring out the details. Corsair's right about using gradual layers of dry brushing, you will notice the difference immediately, I highly recommend giving it a try.

Your work is progressing nicely. I don't know if you have any beaches near by, but that is where I get all my basing sand. Its the beauty of wave action. Not to betray that I am a geologist, but the size partical a wave (or any water) can move is a function of the wave energy. Therefore the further away from the breakers you get the finer the sand grains. You can get a realively coarse gravel all the way down to a fine dust almost, and its already sorted for you (provided its a naturally occuring beach on a lake or sea, etc. If it is trucked in for a man made beach area it probably will be mostly of a uniform size). It beats buying it for me. Just grab some plastic bags and get what you want. I have been using the same bag of sand for about 10 years.
I paint the model, then glue the sand to the base, in most instances I don't paint the sand, mine has a enough color variation that it doesn't look like a beach to me. But otherwise, let the glue dry and then paint it what ever color scheme you're after.
If you go this route, you might want to boil the sand to kill anything, then bake it in the oven to dry it out. Then you are good to go.

Sounds very good, only I haven't got any sea or lake near me! However, I am going on holiday to Sri Lanka soon... so I guess I could bring a small bag from there

I'll be posting some more pics of my mini's when I'm done with a larger part of my warriors of Rohan. After all I don't want to bore you guys with the same stuff over and over!
