I'd prefer a Rivendell Gaurd with pike (as seen in the film) or Azog and White Warg! Having been on board from the start of the Lotr range, I have more Gandalf's than I care to mention.

£12 for a single mini is scandalous frankly.

GW was surprisingly efficient with pre-orders this week. I received my Thrain model today. The sculpt is lovely but the model is undersized. Just eyeballing it next to the Grimhamers he looks a bit weedy. I'll try to post a picture with scale once I build him.

I also received the Dwarf captaint but I haven't scaled that one up yet.

I would have thought that there would be a development cost to pay off, but we have gone from metal, which I would assume to be far more costly, to a refined plastic!

I do prefer using the fine cast plastic to white metal as it is malleable and easy to cut into for conversions and trimming, but I still feel that the bill for the miniature collection which only last year was £8.00 for two lower level heroes is now £10.00 each, and in what is essentially a cheaper material to produce!

My previous days of buying all the range and fielding every army released are definitely over.

I have a serious back log of Hobbit and about 400 Lord of the Rings miniatures to paint, and intend to concentrate on these and lay of fresh releases for a bit!

G.W. will never adjust the prices, but I do worry slightly about the range as I feel that the prices are beyond the reach of the school kids at the starter end of the Hobby. My immediate assessment upon the release of the Hobbit range last yeas was that the newbies would be likely to buy the Goblin town set with a few other bits due to the high cost (particularly compared taking into account inflation with the Fellowship of the Ring box set)! In relation to this I find it somewhat telling that all the stores that I have visited within the last month (Tunbridge Wells, Croydon and Plaza) have had the starter box set with limited edition Radagast, that I would have expected to have gone over Christmas.

I believe that the manufacturing is still done in the U.K. which I think is very admirable of G.W. and is something taht I wish to support, and that the range is less profitable due to the licensing contract but, feel that the benefit of the films popularity and related advertising must go some distance in making up for that and that the price for the miniatures (though excellent in terms of quality) is still extracting the Michael somewhat!

Maybe not as bad scale as I first thought but he still looks a bit weedy.

I like Gandalf's pose, although I think we have had enough Gandalfs already.
I like Thrain, looks decent.
Expected more of the captain though, maybe a helmet or an epic shield :p

But I won't be buying any of them soooo ;D

The cloak is lined with fur so it doesn't feel too think. It needs to be glued on separately and didn't fit great so I will need some extra greenstuff to hide the gaps.

There are plenty of other companies using resin for some of their figures and they are not charging as much as GW. What also alarms me is the poor quality control - maybe not as many holes and bubbles as at first but the number of warped pieces nis far too high (GBOG anyone?).
That's a fabulous looking Grimhammer!

The prices are clearly horrific but damn that's a nice looking figure, the detail on it (particularly the beard and face) looks superb - hopefully they're working out their QC issues.

Seeing Thrain in this pic I think I prefer it to the painted version (even sans hands!) - might be picking one up before too long...

There were zero defects that I've seen on my model with the exception that the cloak didn't fit perfect. I added a bit of greenstuff to correct that. Also, he's for hands now too 8)

Looking at BrentS pic I'd say Thrain is 'armless enough.

The other minis are not doing a lot for me.

I haven't seen anything in the Hobbit release yet that has made me want to spend the money GW are asking for.

'armless? 'ow dare you! :)

Yeah, I'm skipping this month entirely. The only things I've really been happy about so far are the Rivendell Knights and the Eagles.

Which are actually quite resonably priced I have to say. That was one release in the past couple of years that I saw and actually thought that the full retail price is pretty reasonable.

But yeah, I'm not geting any of this month's release....

The difference in scale between Thrain and the Grmhammer in pic looks no worse than the difference in scale between Fimbul and the Hunter Orcs.

And now it makes sense. Metal models used to be in heroic scale in comparison to plastc, but FC are in unheroic scale in comparison to plastic.

Just had delivery of the Aprils releases, The gandalf has the option of having his hat on or off, it has been sculpted really well.

I went to my LGS and was quite happy to see two blisters of Thrain sitting on the shelf (along side the blisters for Captain or Erebor and Captain of Dale). I carefully examined both Thrain packs and the castings looked good (no Finecast miscastings apparent).

I was all set to buy the Finecast Thrain for $20 until I started thinking about what else I could get for $20. I began to waffle on my purchase, thinking how small Thrain's model looked and the fact that I could get an entire box of plastic troops for $25-$35.

I ended up walking out of the store empty handed. I can't justify $20 for a tiny Finecast model that doesn't look all that different than many other dwarf models I currently own. I did buy Thror, but that model has alot more character and is a superior sculpt, IMO.

Maybe someday, Thrain, but not today...
